Workhorse on OSU radar

ONE OF THE California hot spots for college recruiters this year will be Elk Grove's Laguna Creek High. The Sacramento area school is home to four prospects attracting heightened interest from Oregon State, the Pac-10 and beyond. Among them is Bryan Hilliard, a physical, workhorse of a running back who knows how to get the tough yards.

Hilliard (6-0, 195, 4.7), along with Bryson Littlejohn, David Navarez and L.T. Thomas, are among the D-I prospects at Laguna Creek for 2007.

Nearly the entire Pac-10 has made inquiries on the quartet, with Oregon State, Cal, Oregon and Washington plus Kansas State, Fresno State and Colorado among the more recent.

Oregon State has good ties at Laguna Creek, with linebacker Alan Darlin coming to OSU in 2004.

HILLIARD RACKED UP 39 tackles from his strong safety position as a junior but with a thick build and power running style, he's likely to be coming out of the backfield in college.

"He's deceptive with his speed," said Gomes. "He's not going to beat everyone in the 100 but he uses his power inside the tackles and he can break away from defenders pretty well."

The prototypical workhorse, Hilliard looks to carry the ball up to 25 times a game this upcoming season.

"We can give him the ball a ton -- he doesn't break down at all," said Gomes.

Hilliard, also an outstanding baseball player, said academics and fit will be two important criteria to his decision. He carries a 3.4 GPA.

"I'd probably like to go into a situation with a running back who is a junior, then maybe I'd redshirt a year and be 'The Man' the next year," said Hilliard.

HILLIARD SAID HE isn't yet familiar with many of the schools recruiting him save for Fresno State. Laguna Creek's football team camps there during there summer.

"I like them," said Hilliard. "I talked to the coach there a little bit and he liked the way I run, liked my style."

IN ONLY SEVEN games last season, Hilliard rushed for 585 yards on 88 carries, logging six rushing TDs.

Strength numbers from before baseball season include a 225-pound power clean, a 245-pound bench press with a squat of 350.
