We spoke with John Winston Friday afternoon at the Cal team camp and he told us that he'd received a number of phone calls from coaches that day (June 21st was the first day coaches were allowed to call recruits).
Winston told us that Oregon St., Pittsburgh, Oklahoma St., UAB, UNLV, Utah and Texas Tech all called him.
When asked if there were any others schools that he was particularly interested in, Winston said, "Cal -- I'm really interested in Cal."
Winston hasn't taken any trips yet, but said that UAB wants him to take a trip to the campus next weekend. "I have family, two uncles, out there," Winston said. "I might take a trip next weekend."
We asked Winston which issues he considered important to his decision and he replied, "Coaching -- the best coaches to develop my game -- is important. And immediate playing time is important."
Winston will attend the ABCD camp in July, as well as the Big Time and Elite Eight.
He took the SAT recently, but hasn't yet received his score. He said his GPA is 2.5.
