Hass, Ellison snatched up in sixth round

Just like last year's NFL draft it took six rounds before the first Oregon State player was selected. The New Orleans Saints selected receiver Mike Hass with the 171 pick and six picks later linebacker Keith Ellison was scooped up by the Buffalo Bills.

When Hass was asked if thought he would be drafted higher he replied. "I really didn't know what to expect. I am just happy to be drafted where I am."

Hass if the first OSU receiver to be drafted since Chad Johnson and T.J Houshmandzadeh were both selected in 2001 by Cincinnati. Johnson was a second round pick while Houshmandzadeh was chosen in the seventh round.

Fans of the Saints are ecstatic with Hass’s selection loving his precision route running, solid hands and work ethic. Adam Schein of FoxSports.com called the Saints pick of Hass “a fantastic value pick” and that he will be have success with Drew Brees in Louisiana.

The 2005 Bilenikoff Trophy winner will room with USC’s Reggie Bush.

Bills scout Brad Forsyth had nothing but positive things to say about Ellison.

"What he gives us is versatility at the linebacker position," Forsyth said. "He's a really smart guy. He can probably play all three linebacker positions for us, so he provides depth at all three spots."

"He's probably a better athlete than his pure speed numbers indicate. He's a very good athlete with body control, a good coverage guy. He'll help us in the passing game and on special teams in terms of running downfield and covering kicks."

Ellison is the fourth Beaver linebacker in the last five years to be drafted into the NFL.

Linebacker Trent Bray, defensive tackles Sir Henry Anderson and Alvin Smith along with punter Sam Paulescu are all expected to sign free agent contracts in the near future.

  • Twelve OSU players have been drafted in the last four years.
  • Former Oregon State recruit Edorian McCullough who never made it to campus do to academic reasons signed a free agent contract with Jacksonville.

NFL.com Gil Brandt's Analysis:

On Hass … “He's the first player in Pac-10 history to have three consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards. He was a walk-on and just knows how to get open -- a Ricky Proehl type.”

On Ellison … “He has been very, very productive as a three-year starter. He has piled up lots of tackles and will be a linebacker in the NFL.”
