Oregon State Lands QB Of The Future

Ryan Gunderson, 6-4, 212 pound quarterback from Portland (Ore.) Central Catholic has committed to Oregon State. The Beavers had offered Gunderson early in the recruiting process and after taking several unofficial trips, the signal caller decided to be a Beaver.

"I had been thinking about committing for awhile now and I just decided Oregon State was the best place for me," Gunderson said. "It's close to home, I like Coach Erickson a lot and it's a great offense to play in. They really made me feel like they wanted me and that was important to me. I think I'll be able to do well there. "Plus their quarterback situation is good for me to play early. Derek (Anderson) will be a sophomore next year so I could have three years to play there after a redshirt year. On top of that, Oregon State has a good Engineering program which is what I'll be majoring in so I think it was a perfect fit for me all around."

Gunderson could turn out to be the top quarterback in the Northwest this year. He had a strong showing at the Nike Camp in Eugene and was a close second to T.C Ostrander as the top signal caller of the day. Gunderson is a big, strong kid with good arm strength who can get the ball down the field.

He's also a solid athlete who clocked a 4.84 in the 40 and a 4.26 in the shuttle. In 10 games last year he completed 157 of 251 passes (63%) for 2,385 yards and 27 touchdowns with just four interceptions. It will be very interesting to watch the progress in the next few years of both Gunderson and fellow Northwest quarterback Johnny DuRocher who committed to in-state rival Oregon.

"My dad went to Oregon and I grew up liking them but they didn't recruit me at all," Gunderson said. "That's all right though, I know this is a business and they liked Johnny who is a friend and I'm happy for him. I'm not going to lie though, I'm sure I'll have some extra motivation when we play Oregon but I don't have any bitterness at all against Oregon and wish them the best. I'm real comfortable with Oregon State and I truly feel it's the best situtation for me."

Gunderson committed to Oregon State over scholarship offers from Oklahoma State, Portland State and Idaho. He also took unofficial visits and was considering Notre Dame, Purdue, Washington, Arizona State, Cal and Northwestern.

"I went up with my family to Oregon State last Friday," Gunderson said. "We all talked with the coaches and that's really when I realized I wanted to go there. I had played out the process pretty good and felt like the timing was right to go ahead and commit now."

Academically, Gunderson is carrying a 3.9 GPA and he scored a 1290 on the PSAT.
