COMMITMENT: 4-star QB headed to Corvallis

Jake Gelakoska, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback from Jackson High School in Mill Creek, Wash., verbally committed to Mike Riley and the Oregon State Beavers Tuesday. "I committed a little bit ago to Oregon State," the 4-star prospect told Scout.com. "I got done with school today and it felt good. I like Oregon State a lot, so why not get it done with now? I've been thinking about it a lot."

"I called Bruce (Read). He was out walking, trying to get some exercise. Then I called (Mike) Riley and he said it made his summer. They were all really happy."

It may have been considered a no-brainer because the Beavers were Gelakoska's only offer, but he's not looking back - even if ten offers appear in the mail now. "I'm a Beaver now, so there's no looking back," he said, matter-of-factly.

HIS STOCK ALSO looked to be on the rise. A week and a half ago at the NIKE combine and at Oregon's half day camp, Gelakoska drew strong praise from the Duck staff.

"They said that they signed three quarterbacks last year and said I'm their No. 1 right now --- They just want to make sure they're going to offer a quarterback this class," said Gelakoska following the weekend. "They said they're probably going to but they just want to wait and make sure."

Gelakoska, however, had OSU high on his list even before they decided to offer him. "I like how they throw the ball so much," he said. "They throw the ball down the field as much as any team in the Pac-10. And they have a good quarterback situation. That's what really caught my eye."

And with the quarterbacking situation the way it is in Corvallis, Gelakoska is going to work his hardest to compete right from the jump. "They said that they only carry three quarterbacks at any one time, so if you're the best you'll play," he said.

A FIRST-TEAM All-WesCo selection his junior season, he threw for 1,938 yards, 17 TDs and 6 INTs, completing 49 percent of his passes on 136 of 275 attempts.

Gelakoska also rushed for 360 yards and 7 TDs in '05. He averaged 229.8 yards of total offense a game.

THE BOOK ON 'Broadway Jake' is that he's a quarterback with a live arm with uncommon speed; he clocked a 4.52 in the 40 last year on grass at Jackson.

There are over five minutes of highlight tape on his player page.
