Arizona OL Down To Five

It's a strong year for linemen in Arizona this year with four of the top five players in the state being on the offensive or defensive side of the line. The top offensive lineman in the state and #3 in the West in our eyes is Mikal Brewer, 6-4, 275 pounds from Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial. Brewer is up to 11 scholarship offers but has already trimmed his list to five right now.

Brewer is big, athletic and nasty on the field and a borderline top 100 player. He was the state 4A heavyweight champion in wrestling last year and the athleticism, strength and toughness that has helped him in wrestling has translated very well to the football field.

"It mostly helps with my feet and balance," Brewer said. "In wrestling, you can't push or pull too hard on someone or you'll stumble and lose your balanace. That carries over on the field as well as the overall discipline you have to have and the toughness. I'm a very nice, easygoing guy off the field but when the whistle blows, I can turn on the switch real easy."

Brewer has taken a pro-active approach to the recruiting process and has already made some unofficial trips to give him a better idea of what he's looking for in a school.

"What I did was make a list of several factors that I wanted in a college," Brewer said. "First on my list is academics followed by location, football program, coaching staff and facilities. I then graded all of the schools on a five point scale, five being the highest. I wasn't ranking the schools, just grading them individually.

"The schools I ended up with on my list are Arizona, Stanford, UCLA, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame. Arizona is close to home and I love the staff. Stanford is great academically and along with UCLA has a good balance of academics and athletics. Vandy was the first to offer me and I really think they're an up and coming program. Notre Dame has great tradition and is strong academically as well.

"I've already taken unofficial trips to Arizona and Stanford. I might take an unofficial trip to UCLA since it's close and I'll for sure be taking official visits to all five schools and will be deciding close to signing day."

All of Brewer's top five minus Notre Dame has offered. In addition, Arizona State, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Nebraska and Northwestern have also offered scholarships. Academically, Brewer is carrying a 3.92 GPA and scored an 1160 on the SAT.
