Local standout seeing interest heat up

RATED ONE OF the top linebacker prospects in the state by The Oregonian, Redmond High's Kevin Leeland is working on playing his way his season into a few scholarship offers. Interest has heated up for the 6-0.5, 215 pounder from at least one Pac-10 school since Sept. 1, and his combination of power, defensive instincts and that he runs well could mean more is on the way.

Recent contact from Oregon State and Oregon has been through the mail, said Leeland, but that could change if he continues on his current path.

In a recruiting season, some prep senior prospects are just below the offer line on a school's board. Oftentimes, the school will ask these recruits for game tape from their first two games in order to determine if an offer will be extended. That appears to be the case with a couple of Northwest schools for Leeland.

With appx. 25 tackles through Redmond's first two games, Leeland's received calls last week from both Washington and Idaho, seeking game tape from the Grants Pass and Bend games.

At UCLA's invitation, he also attended the Bruins camp earlier this summer.

"They said they liked what they saw, and said they'd get back to me sometime in September," said Leeland.

Leeland said his plan is to take a wait and see approach, do what he needs to do on the field, and let the recruiting process sort itself out.

"I'll just keep talking to the guys that call me, send tape out and see what happens," he said.

AS A JUNIOR, Leeland was first team all-league at both linebacker and tight end, and honorable mention all-state at 'backer. He burst onto the scene as a freshman, starting at varsity linebacker and logging 70-plus tackles. The book on Leeland is he has the "RH" factor, (runs and hits)

Also a standout in the classroom, Leeland holds a 3.77 GPA. He is considering Engineering and Kinesiology as areas of study.

He's got some pretty good football genes, too -- father Jeff was a safety on Washington's 1978 Rose Bowl team.
