Beavers headed to Sun Bowl Dec. 29

There's still a week of college football left to be played, but the Oregon State Beavers already know where they will be playing in the postseason. The Beavers were unofficially invited to the 73rd Burt Sun Bowl following their 30-28 win over the Oregon Ducks Nov. 24.

"I've already told the Beavers I'm going to take them out of the rain in Oregon to sunny El Paso on Dec. 29," executive director of the Sun Bowl association Bernie Olivas said.

Olivas cannot officially invite the Beavers until the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) releases the California Golden Bears. That could happen as early as Tuesday when the new BCS standings are published.

But what if California loses to Stanford next weekend? First, if you see pigs flying, let me know. Second, it doesn't matter. A Cal loss would result in the Beavers and Bears being tied for second in the conference, but the Bears win the tiebreaker due to their 41-13 win over OSU Sept. 30.

Pac-10 teams have played 18 times in the Sun Bowl since 1935. Eight of the conferences 10 teams have traveled to El Paso in the last 11 years with Washington State and Oregon State being the only teams to not have played in Sun Bowl Stadium.

"Over the last 11 years, we've had eight of the Pac-10 teams, but we've never had the Beavers," Olivas said. "We are very excited to have them, especially the way they played today. That's exciting football. We are really looking forward to having them."

Oregon State's opponent will be a team from the Big 12 (Kansas State or Texas Tech) or the Big East (Rutgers, Louisville or West Virginia) and will not be announced until Dec. 3. Rutgers travels to West Virginia while Louisville takes on Connecticut at home next weekend.

Due to an agreement between the Sun and Gator Bowls the Gator Bowl officials will get first pick on a Big East or Big 12 team. According to Olivas, Gator Bowl officials are leaning towards Kansas State or Texas Tech and that means OSU will face a Big East opponent.

"It seems that they're leaning towards the Big 12," Olivas said. "And if that's the case, I would think that if West Virginia beats Rutgers, we will have Rutgers as the opponent from the Big East."

But that may have changed already with West Virginia losing to South Florida Saturday. Louisville defeated Pitt and if they take care of Connecticut they would get a BCS bid. Oregon State, in all likely hood, will face the winner of the West Virgina-Rutgers victor. Both West Virginia and Rutgers have been ranked in the top 10 this season.
