OSU visit will be key for Beaver verbal

A BEAVER verbal commit and human highlight reel is scheduled to trip to Corvallis the weekend of January 12 and the visit may go a long ways towards deciding his college future. Although he gave an oral pledge to Oregon State earlier this summer, he's still keeping his options open, one of which has to do with another Pac-10 school he tripped to earlier this month.

Game changer Darrell Catchings verbally committed back in August and then simply exploded this season, leading Escondido deep into the playoffs through his receiving, kick returns, pass interceptions -- he even served as the team's punter. His senior season gridiron exploits did not go unnoticed.

Catchings tripped to Washington State earlier this month.

"I enjoyed it a lot, it's really nice up there -- nice facilities. And I liked hanging out with the coaches and the players," said Catchings.

Oregon State, the school he verbally committed to back in August, and Washington State are the two frontrunners, Catchings said.

"It's still kind of up in the air. I don't know what will (help decide it) maybe it will be which visit I enjoy better, I guess," he said.

Catchings will trip to Oregon State January 12.

"I'm also looking -- a little bit -- at UNLV, I might go on a trip there after Oregon State," said Catchings.

Among Catchings' honors and awards this season, first team All-CIF, Hall of Champions All-San Diego Section Team, Offensive Player of the Year for the Valley League and the North County Times Offensive Player of the Year. His prep coach calls him the best player he's ever had, hands down.

Catchings had 49 receptions for 929 yards with 15 touchdowns in '06, with another 157 rushing yards. He was generally regarded as the best kick returner in the section.
