VERBAL COMMIT: Beavers land Northwest ATH

ANTHONY WATKINS was going to take a couple more official visits, but after a sitdown with his family on Wednesday, he knew the time was right. "I just committed to Oregon State," Watkins told "It just seemed right. I just talked to my family and it felt good."

Watkins had planned to officially visit Montana and Idaho before making his final decision, but those trips are now off.

He then called up OSU assistant coach Bruce Read to give the coaches the good news.

"He said they are really excited," said Watkins.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound athlete from Highline High School in Burien, Wash. had 22 touchdowns on offense and over 950 rushing yards, while picking off three passes on defense.

"They are bringing me in more as an athlete and givin me the option where I want to play," added Watkins.

In addition to Oregon State, Watkins held offers from Kentucky, Idaho and Montana and had drawn looks from Washington and Washington State this recruiting season.

So where will Anthony start out his career in Corvallis?

"Safety," he said, matter-of-factly. "I'm just natural at it."
