COMMENT/QUESTION: "I am happy with the victory, but am a little torn. Some of my acquaintances say this victory doesn't really count because it was a win over a lower division opponent. Should the Beavers play against lower division foes?" Ambivalent in Albany.
ANSWER: I have had an ongoing debate with quite a few people about this very subject. I prefer the Beavers to play all Division I opponents. That said; this was one time where a lower division opponent was perfect for the situation. The offense needed to have a good opening game in order to gain some confidence and the game against EKU provided just that. The victory will also count towards the Beavers' bowl eligibility later in the year.
QUESTION/COMMENT: "What's going on with all of these penalties? I feel picked on." Tortured in Tualatin.
ANSWER: I have had an ongoing debate with quite a few people about this very subject. In the end, it doesn't matter if the Beavers are over exuberant or the officials are over critical, the calls are being made. In baseball, some umpires have low strike zones and some have high strike zones, the good players make the adjustments necessary to be successful. In basketball, some officials allow physical play and some don't, the good players make the adjustment. The Beavers have to make adjustments to their behavior or the excess penalties will cost them a game or two down the road. Again, it doesn't really matter why the penalties are being called, it is the Beavers' responsibilities to adjust to the way the officials are calling the game.
COMMENT/QUESTION: "I was warned not to bring my backpack to any more games at Reser because it would not be allowed in the stadium. The same person told me that I could bring in a sports bag, or that I could bring the backpack in if I cut the straps off. What gives?" Baffled in Baker City.
ANSWER: I have had an ongoing debate with quite a few people about this very subject. The best we can figure is that most backpacks have more compartments than sports bags, grocery sacks, duffle bags, suitcases, steamer trunks etc. and that makes them easier for security personnel to search. I realize that this makes it a little more difficult for people with small children (can't hold their hands because you're holding your non-backpack bag) but most of those people sit in the cheap seats and aren't pumping that much money into the sports program anyway.
COMMENT: "The Beavers' roster lists Jayson Boyd at 6'3" tall. He looks taller than that to me." Vondering in Verbort
ANSWER: I have had an ongoing debate with quite a few people about this very subject. Jayson is 6'3" but it's a tall 6'3".
