OSU running back target talks recruiting

OREGON STATE was the first to offer an Arizona running back but others, including a second Pac-10 school, have since followed suit. A player who can mix it up both inside and out, the 5-11, 217-pounder with 4.41 speed weighs in on the recruiting process, Oregon State and what will be important to his decision over the coming year. He'll also be at the L.A. Scout.com combine this weekend.

Jamal Womble currently resides in Sierra Vista, Ariz., but he's been there a short time, originally hailing from North Carolina. Womble's father is in the military, and he's been out West for about the last year and a half. And his heart, it would seem, remains in the South.

"If a school likes me that is from the South, it's going to be an edge over everyone else. That's where my family is. But I'll also go anywhere, it will depend on which school is best for me," said Womble.

Oregon State has been in regular contact this spring, said Womble, with Beaver coaches Mike Cavanaugh and Jay Locey keeping in touch via text messages.

"It's a good school, they play with a lot of passion and that's something I really admire," said Womble.

At 5-11 and 217-pounds, Womble is a bruiser but one with speed; a yards after contact machine, but also a player with burst. Womble says this is what stood out to the Oregon State coaches and resulted in his first scholarship offer.

"They like my size/speed combination, my ability to mix it inside and out -- to run you over or run around you," said Womble. There are six-plus minutes of junior season highlights on his player page accessible from the link below.

His junior season, Womble tallied more than 1,223 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Colts.

Still, his early preference is to head back South all things being equal, though he noted things can always change.

"Academics, the city, coaching stability, style of offense, will all be important," said Womble, who just recently picked up his second Pac-10 offer, from Arizona State. "(Early) playing time will be a tiny factor but it won't be a big deal."

Womble, who has been clocked at 4.41 in the 40, is continuing to finalize his camp and combine schedule, although he will be showing off his wares at the Scout.com combine in L.A. this weekend. Womble has achieved a qualifying score on the SAT.
