NorCal DB Likes OSU

You won't find a better cover corner anywhere on the West Coast than Fresno (Calif.) Edison's Clifton Smith. Smith was hands down the top cover man at the NorCal Nike Camp the past two years and is poised for a big senior season, and he likes the Beavers.

Smith, 5-8, 170 pounds was one of the state's top players a year ago rushing for 1,317 yards and 13 touchdowns to earn League Offensive Player of the Year honors. He also picked off seven passes returning one for a score to earn 1st team All-State Underclass honors at corner.

"I'm never satisfied," Smith said. "I don't just want to be the best corner in the West, I want to be the top guy in the nation. That's my goal and I'm going to keep trying to prove myself until I get there."

Although not the biggest or ever the fastest cornerback around, Smith has incredible feet and his lateral ability and skill in blanketing receivers is unmatched.

"I've never seen feet like that before," Long Beach Poly safety Freddie Parish told us after the two attended the UCLA one day camp. "He was the best player I saw at this camp and is a great player."

Academic issues have slowed down Smith's recruitment a bit but he still boast scholarship offers from Oregon State, Arizona State and Fresno State.

"Fresno State is the only school that I've talked to on the phone," Smith said. "I think some schools may be backing off me a little. I liked USC a lot early on but I haven't heard from them awhile so I'm not sure if they're still interested.

"My dream school would probably be Miami, I've always wanted to go there but I'm not hearing from them either. Of the schools that have offered, I like Oregon State but I'm keeping my options open. I just want to see who is still interested in me and then I'll start to think about where I should visit."

Smith has already taken the SAT once and will take the ACT in October. He said he would like to play as a true freshman and is looking for a school where he feels comfortable with the players, coaches and the area.
