'Zona speed merchant eyes camp at OSU

ALLANTE BATTLE has seen his football recruitment soar following a phenomenal showing on the track when he took home the state title in all four of the events he entered. The 5-9, 170-pound lightning bolt recently received an offer from Oregon State. He is also considering a trip out to the Northwest next month for the Beavers' summer youth camp.

Battle, out of Desert Vista High in Phoenix, said he hopes to participate in at least one out of state school's camp, with Oregon State looking like the odds-on favorite.

"From what they said about Oregon it seems like a really nice place," said Battle. "I'm going to the ASU one, and then U of A and then I might go to the Oregon State one."

In the Class 5A-Division I state meet Battle took home the title in the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and he ran the anchor of the 4x400-meter relay winning team. For good measure, he set personal records in all four events, including a 10.64 in the 100-m.

Battle said most of the football recruiting contact has gone through his prep coach but among the schools he has been able to talk to include Oregon State.

"I haven't talked in-depth with any of them really," he said. "Right now, distance really doesn't matter to me, if I have to (head out of state) I will."

Where Battle looks to line up depends on the school. At least three have talked about him playing cornerback.

"U of A, Oregon State and San Diego State," said Battle. "I don't have a preference, wide receiver maybe a little more than corner."

Last season Battle caught 18 passes for 496 yards and four TDs. He rushed for 313 yards and 5 TDs and earned first team all-region honors at receiver and was named second team all-region at cornerback.
