Doggett named to Nagurski Watch List

Oregon State University senior linebacker Derrick Doggett is one of 49 players on the 2007 Bronko Nagurski Watch List, the Football Writers Association has announced The Nagurski Award is presented to the nation's top defensive player.

Doggett, a 6-3 215-pound native of San Diego, is a two-time Pac-10 Conference Second Team selection. He has started 19 games and has accounted for 87 tackles and four interceptions for his career. Two of his three interceptions last season were returned for touchdowns, including a 34-yard score in the win over Oregon.

The Nagurski Award banquet is Mon., Dec. 3 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, NC. The recipient will be announced at the 2007 ESPN College Football Awards Show in Orlando in December.

The 2006 recipient was Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis.

This is the sixth consecutive year that a Beaver football player has been named to the Nagurski Award watch list. Last year, safety Sabby Piscitelli made the watch list with linebacker Trent Bray being named in 2005, free safety Mitch Meeuwsen in 2004, , linebacker Richard Seigler in 2003, and defensive tackle Eric Manning and cornerback Dennis Weathersby earning the honor in 2002.

Other OSU players named to preseason watch lists include center Kyle DeVan (Rimington Trophy - outstanding center), offensive lineman Jeremy Perry (Lombardi  Award - top linebacker or lineman) and defensive end Jeff Van Orsow (Lott Trophy - top defensive player).

Receiver Sammie Stroughter (Biletnikoff Award - top receiver, Randy Moss Return Man Award - top return man) and running back Yvenson Bernard (Doak Walker Award - top running back) will most likely be named to watch lists in the coming months.

Two Oregon State players have earned major awards under head coach Mike Riley: receiver Mike Hass (Biletnikoff Award - nation's top receiver) and kicker Alexis Serna (Lou Groza Award - nation's top place kicker) both grabbed trophies in 2005.
