DRIVE CHART: Utah at Oregon State

A blow by blow account of the Beavers 24-7 win over Utah Aug. 30


Utah took the opening kickoff at their 20 and started off the game with a false start making it 1st and 15.  An incomplete pass, a tackle for loss by Daniel Drayton on a sweep and a 9-yard completion forced the Utes to punt on 4th and 10.

OSU fair caught the punt at the OSU 42 at 13:22.  Two rushes by Yvenson Bernard and one catch by Bernard netted eight yards forcing the Beavers to punt on 4th and 2.  Alexis Serna shanked a punt 17 yards out of bounds at the Utah 33 at 11:15. 

Utah marched 39 yards on eight plays, highlighted by a 26-yard pass to Brain Hernandez, to reach the OSU 28 before Dorian Smith recorded a tackle for loss and Brain Johnson threw two incompletions, one of them should have been caught by a wide open Hernandez for a first down.  A 45-yard field goal attempt into the wind by Louie Sokada fell well short and to the left.

At 8:52 Sean Canfield was sacked on first down and threw two incomplete passes to Chris Johnson forcing a three and out.  Serna punted to the Utah 44 where it was fair caught.

A fumbled snap and a sack coupled with a 15-yard personal foul penalty forced a punt on 4th and 34, but Slade Norris tried jumping over the blockers on a bonehead play and roughed the kicker resulting in an automatic first down.  Three rushing plays later, one resulting in running back Matt Asiata's injury, forced another punting situation on 4th and 2.

Taylor Kavanaugh fair caught the punt at 3:58 on the OSU 18.  On first down James Rodgers took an end-around for 17 yards to the team's first, first down of the game, unfortunately a holding penalty by Kyle DeVan brought the ball back six yards.  After a 10-yard completion to Gabe Miller, Anthony Brown dropped back to back passes forcing the Beavers to punt again.

Utah starts with the ball at their own 36 at 3:22.  The Utes move 29 yards in five plays, highlighted by a 21-yard reception by Derrick Richards before two incomplete passes and a sack force them to punt.

Canfield completes a 15-yard pass to Johnson and Bernard rushes for three yards before the end of the quarter.



Lyle Moevao takes over on second down and throws a horrible pass, the receiver was partly to blame here as well, that was intercepted by Sean Smith on the OSU 34.

Three players later Brian Johnson finds Brent Casteel on a 36-yard touchdown at 13:26.  Casteel and his teammates were flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for posing in the endzone and "brushing the dirt off of their shoulders." (Let them celebrate Pac-10 refs!)

Utah 7, Oregon State 0

Gerard Lawson returns the kickoff 23 yards to the OSU 45.  A delay of game and false start mar the drive resulting in OSU punting again.  Serna gets his best kick of the night off, a 42-yard boot that was downed at the Utah 8 at 10:53.

The Beaver defense comes up big forcing the Utes to go three and out.

Oregon State begins the drive at their own 42.  The coaches give the ball five consecutive times to Bernard for two first downs as he accounts for 41 of the drives 58 yards.  The key play came on 4th and 7 when Darrell Catchings catches a 17-yard pass for a first down after dropping a pass on third down.  Two rushes later Bernard rumbles into the endzone on a nine yard run for the team's first points at 4:58.

Utah 7, Oregon State 7

In one of the critical drives of the game Johnson goes down with a shoulder injury after completing a 13-yard pass to Hernandez.  Tommy Grady takes over on 1st and 10, three plays later it is 4th and 8 and the Utes have to punt again.  Sakoda gets off another great punt as Kavanaugh fair catches it at the OSU 8 at 2:04.

The Beavers hand the ball off to Bernard four times to end the first half.



Utah kickoffs as Lawson returns the ball 24 yards to the OSU 24.  Two plays later Canfield under throws a streaking Brandon Powers,. who had beat his man, down the sideline as Smith grabs his second interception of the game at the Utah 36 at 14:03.

The Beaver defense forces a three an out.  Sakoda with another blast, this time a 62-yard punt downed at the OSU 1.

A 29-yard pass to Anthony Brown notches OSU a first down before two incomplete passes amidst a couple of running plays forces a punt.  Marcus Wilson bobbles the punt and Lawson recovers, but a holding penalty by Joel Cohen forces OSU to punt again.

Men in Black force another three and out.  Punt results in a touchback at 9:48.

Bernard rips off a 54-yard run as he spins and stiff arms Utah defenders left and right.  On 4th and 1 Canfield completes a seven yard pass to Bernard to make it first and goal.  Canfield finds Catchings in the endzone on a six yard slant for a touchdown.

Oregon State 14, Utah 7

For the third consecutive series Utah fails to make a first down.  A 15-yard personal foul penalty on the punt by Utah gives the Beavers the ball at the Utah 42.

James Rodgers gets consecutive hand offs picking up 10 yards and a first down on each run.  Serna connects on a 37-yard field goal at 2:51.

Oregon State 17, Utah 7

Starting at the Utah 24, the Utes pick up two first downs before the end of the quarter ending at the Utah 49 with 1st and 10.



A holding penalty and a sack by Slade Norris and Victor Butler halt the Utah drive forcing the eighth punt by Sakoda.

A five play, 57-yard drive highlighted by a 25-yard reverse by James Rodgers puts the game away for good.  Bernard runs 10-yards, barely getting touched, for his second touchdown of the game at 11:34.

Oregon State 24, Utah 7

The Utes pick up back to back first downs, one via the pass, the other by a pass interference call on Al Afalava before three straight incomplete passes force another punt.

Moevao hooks up with Howard Croom on 12-yard completion for a first down.  A broken play on 3rd and 7 forces a punt.

Another three and out for the Utah offense at 6:32.

Oregon State counters with a three and out of their own.

Utah goes six and out after picking up one first down.  Punts at 3:54.

In the final drive of the game, Matt Sieverson rushes six times for 16 yards and catches one pass for 10 yards.  Ryan Gunderson enters the game and helps the team pick up two first downs to run out the clock.

Final score: Oregon State 24, Utah 7
