Beaver Bytes

The run down on Oregon State football and basketball news from the past week.

  • Changes are forthcoming on the Oregon State offensive line in the wake of serious leg injuries to left tackles Brian Kilkenny and Lee Davis.

Senior Mike Kuykendall, a two-year starter at left guard who played left tackle as a freshman and sophomore, will return to his original position this afternoon when the Beavers began preparing for Saturday's game against UCLA.

Junior David Lose (Low-SAY), Kuykendall's backup at guard through the first five weeks, will move up to the No. 1 spot at that position...Injuries force shake-up on OSU O-line

  • Former Beaver, Reggie Tongue had two interceptions on Sunday, including on for a touchdown.  For all the latest on what's happening with ex-Beavers in the pros, see the NFL Beaver Update for Week 4.

  • As Oregon State mounted impressive victories against lesser opposition and Beaver Nation swelled with pride and high expectations, Dennis Erickson maintained, "We haven't played anybody yet."

    The Beavers have now.

Southern California popped the Beaver bubble and exposed a suspect offensive line, and those Rose Bowl dreams are on hold...
Beavers will try to get back on track

  • "They're a football team that is very, very talented - they always are. They're very phsyical; they're probably the most physical team we've faced all year. You look at them defensively, and they're very big inside. Rodney Leisle is probably as good a defensive tackle as you'll face all year - he was last year. Marcus Reese is an athletic linebacker. And their secondary is playing really well; Ricky Manning, to me, is one of the best corners in the country and has great cover skills...Erickson Meets the Press

  • There was no panic or accusatory finger-pointing Tuesday as the Oregon State football team returned to practice following the demoralizing 22-0 loss at Southern California.

Rather, the players presented a united front and promised despondent Beaver Believers everywhere that better results will be forthcoming Saturday when OSU (4-1, 0-1 Pac-10) aims for redemption against UCLA (3-1, 0-0)...Beavers aren't pointing fingers

  • There was good news in Oregon State's 22-0 loss Saturday at USC. It just wasn't the kind most people notice.

Carl Tobey punted a career-long 63-yarder and averaged 42 yards in the game. The only problem for the Beavers: He punted 10 times...Oregonian OSU Notebook

  • Carl Tobey is second in the Pac-10 conference in punting average at 42 yards.  This is pretty amazing since most of us Beaver fans were used to the Randy Lund years.

  • If Oregon State needed any reminders about Saturday's debacle at USC, there was game tape to provide conclusive evidence that it was not a bad dream.

The reality of OSU's 22-0 loss was replayed Sunday in living color.

"It was kind of rough to sit there and watch it," quarterback Derek Anderson said before Tuesday's practice. "It was kind of disbelief that we could really play that bad like we did."...

  • Did you really believe they could run the table?

I wanted to believe it, but the Pac-10 is a little bit different than the Mountain West or even the Big East.

While Miami is busy running it up on Rutgers and Boston College each week in the Big East, the Pac-10 schools are in for eight dogfights...Top to bottom the best in the nation

  • Great, another school year is upon us. For me this is my 16th year of education and I'm pretty sure I'm ready to quit and get a job. Of course I'm studying to be a teacher so I'll probably spend the rest of my life in some type of school.

For you incoming freshmen, don't worry; college is a lot different than the public school system. Most of those stories you heard during your senior year are true and yes, you will probably gain 15 pounds...Let's set some goals and tear down some goalposts

  • It took the Beavers a good portion of last football season to get the offensive line in line.

This season, things were looking up. Through the first four of Oregon State's games, the offensive line was blocking and protecting while the skill guys were piling up averages of 500 yards and 48 points a game...Offensive line gets second major loss

  • The Oregon State at Arizona State Pacific-10 Conference football game scheduled for Sat., Oct. 12 will air live over the Beaver Sports Televison Network. Air time for the broadcast will be 7 p.m. PDT. from Sun Devil Stadium.

The Beaver Sports Network consists of KVAL in Eugene, KOTI in Klamath Falls, KCBY in Coos Bay, KOBI in Medford, KPIC in Roseburg, and Fox 12 in Portland...Football at Arizona State to be Televised Live in Oregon

  • The key to beating Oregon State would appear to be putting the sort of defensive pressure USC did on quarterback Derek Anderson—sacking him five times in a 22-0 shutout.

But UCLA defensive end Dave Ball isn't so sure...
Ball thinks the Beavers will want to run it up

  • For UCLA defensive back Ricky Manning, the annual reunion is set for Saturday.

That's when Manning will meet up with one of his favorite cousins and one of his favorite cornerbacks. Manning is a relative of Oregon State All-Pac-10 defensive tackle Eric Manning. He is a rival of the Beavers' top defensive back, Dennis Weathersby...Manning ready for final reunion

  • While most of his teammates were enjoying their day off Monday, hanging out with friends or preparing for the start of school, Oregon State offensive guard David Lose spent some of his free time watching game film.

Lose joined fellow offensive lineman Mike Kuykendall for a film cram session, taking in snippets of offensive line play from earlier games. The Beavers, who lost starting left tackle Brian Kilkenny to a broken leg in the Fresno State game, now are without the services of backup Lee Davis for at least five weeks after he injured his right knee in last Saturday's loss to Southern California...Giving his all on the line

  • It was painful for the Oregon State Beavers to relive their game against Southern California on film. But it put closure on the loss.

Now the Beavers must get ready for UCLA. Oregon State (4-1) hosts the Bruins (3-1) Saturday at Reser Stadium.

"It's only one loss; we're 4-1 and we've got a lot of games left," coach Dennis Erickson said. "The bottom line is, we look at the mistakes we made and try to correct them, and get ready for this football game." ...Beavers shrug off loss; Giant Killers honored

  • In payback games this season, Oregon State has earned a split.

A 59-19 victory over Fresno State was followed by a 22-0 drubbing Saturday at USC.

OSU finds itself in a familiar position heading into Saturday's game with UCLA. The Bruins put a 38-7 pasting on the Beavers in last season's Pacific-10 Conference opener...

  • Offense, offense, offense ... STOP.

Just when you thought you heard enough West Coast this, spread offense that, the DEFENSES in the Pac-10 (well, at least two defenses) stood up and were counted on Saturday...FoxSports

  • Why to watch: This is the Pac 10 opener for the Bruins coming off an easy and efficient win over San Diego State. Oregon State is looking to get its mojo back after getting skunked by USC. A win puts the Beavers right back in the conference race whie a loss most likely knocks them

  • The Beavers dropped to #32 in the AP and #28 in coaches poll after the loss to USC.

  • It's human nature for fans, players, and coaches of every program to be excited about a new season, but the sense around the Oregon State University men's basketball team is that this could be a special year. First-year head coach Jay John has brought a refreshing philosophy to the program, and the players have responded with a recommitment to the game and to the university.

"This is as positive as I have been for a season since I have been at Oregon State," senior forward Brian Jackson said. "It's been mentally tough around this program for a few years, but the new coaching staff has created a fresh attitude and the guys are excited again to play basketball."...OSU Basketball Outlook

  • Five months into his tenure at Oregon State, Jay John still doesn't always know whether he's coming or going.

If you happen to catch the Beavers' new basketball coach on his cell phone, he's got to stop for a moment just to remember what day it is, where he is and why he's there...OSU recruiting battles heat up

  • Two Coaching changes took place this year in the Pac-10, and though most of the attention went to Lorenzo Romar in Seattle...Oregon State might have made the most significant upgrade in the conference.  The change went widely unnoticed by most College Basketball Fans, but in Covallis this certainly warranted front page (premium)
