Last time Oregon State and Cincinnati met...
This is the first time Oregon State and Idaho State have met.

Last time Idaho State played...
Sept. 8, 2007 - Idaho State 37, Southern Oregon 11
Idaho State University got a solid effort from freshman quarterback Russel Hill, and a huge defensive effort, limiting Southern Oregon to -24 yards rushing and just 119 yards overall as the Bengals picked up a win in head coach John Zamberlin's debut 37-11 at Holt Arena.

The Bengals scored in every quarter, and held Southern Oregon to -18 yards through the 8:57 mark of the second half. The 37-11 win marked the debut of John Zamberlin on the Idaho State sidelines, after 10 years as the head coach of Central Washington ... more from the

Series history (0-0).
Thursday's matchup marks the first time the Beavers and Bengals have met on the gridiron.

ISU is 0-1 all time against the Pac-10 losing to at Oregon 52-7 in 1988. The Bengals are 1-3 when playing on Sept. 15 and are 9-7 all-time in the state of Oregon (9-6 vs. Portland State, 0-1 vs. Oregon)

OSU is 18-2-2 against current Big Sky members (Eastern Washington - 2-0, Montana - 12-2-2, Northern Arizona - 1-0, Portland State - 2-0, Sacramento State - 1-0) with the two losses coming against Montana (1990, 1996). The Beavers are 0-4 when playing on Sept. 15 with losses to UNLV (1990, 20-45), Arizona (1984, 8-27), #1 USC (1979, 5-42) and #12 Auburn (1973, 9-18).

Idaho State connections.
Idaho State has two players on their roster from Oregon - LB Cody Clark (Crater HS/Central Point) and OL Scott Hunter (North Ben HS/North Bend). Oregon State does not have a player on its roster from Idaho.

Former Oregon State head coach Dave Kragthorpe (1985-90) was the head coach at Idaho State from 1980- 82. He finished his ISU career with a record of 21-14, a .600 winning percentage.

In six seasons in Corvallis he went 17-48-2 and is most remembered by OSU faithful for leading the Beavers’ to an improbable 21-20 at Washington in 1985 -- at the time it was the largest point spread (38) ever overcome in an NCAA game. Former Idaho State head coach Garth Hall (1988-91) was an assistant for Kragthorpe at OSU.

The Bengals have defeated three Division I-A opponents in 26 tries. Their last victory was against Utah State (27-20) in 2000. The Bengals almost beat the Aggies in 2001 and 2002 as well losing by one and five.

The Beavers have won 23 consecutive non-conference games at home and head coach Mike Riley is a perfect 13-0 at Reser Stadium against non-Pac-10 opponents. The streak includes wins over Utah, Boise State (twice), Eastern Washington (twice), Idaho, Portland State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, Fresno State (twice), Baylor, Nevada, UNLV, Eastern Kentucky, Northern Arizona, San Diego State, Georgia Southern, San Jose State, Northern Illinois, Utah State and North Texas.

Oregon State has won seven consecutive games vs. an opponent from a lower division, dating back to a 35-14 loss to Montana to open the 1996 season.

Four FBS schools have lost to FCS schools this year. Last week, Southern Illinois beat Northern Illinois 34-31 and Northern Iowa beat Iowa State 24-13. In the opening week, Nichols State beat Rice 16-14 on a safety with four minutes left, and Appalachian State defeated Michigan 34-32.

Orange and Black, Black and Orange.
It doesn’t happen very often, but this will be a rare game of and orange and black team playing an orange and black team. Thankfully, ISU has their own equipment. Several years ago, Idaho State actually purchased helmets from Oregon State because they were the same color.

Stout Defenses.
Idaho State enters the game as the national I-AA leader in rushing defense, tackles for loss and total defense. The Bengals limited Southern Oregon to minus-24 rushing yards and just 119 yards of total offense. The Bengals had 13 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, five sacks and three interceptions.

Oregon State enters Saturday’s game 12th in the nation and second in the Pac-10 (Arizona State 4th @ 159.5) for total defense allowing 212.5 yards per game. Opponents are averaging less than a yard per carry (0.8).

The team ranks third for rush defense allowing just 24 yards per game, trailing only Penn State (-1.5) and Iowa (22.5). The Beavers’ 4.0 sacks per game is tied for eighth overall and only three clubs (Oklahoma, Michigan State and Georgia Tech) have registered more yards for tackles-for-loss than OSU’s 110. Over the last 16 games OSU’s defense has accounted for 638 lost yards while its opponents have 337.

100 = W.
When RB Yvenson Bernard runs for 100 yards or more, the Beavers are almost guaranteed a victory. The last seven times Bernard has topped the 100 yard mark OSU has put another "W" in the win column. Here are some other facts about Bernard:

  • Has a chance chance to be the seventh player in Pac-10 history to post three 1,000-yard seasons.
  • Is currently the conference’s active leading rusher with 2,843 yards
  • Needs to average 82 yards per game to crack into the Pac-10's top-10 for career rushing. If he makes it it would be the third Orange and Black player in the top 10, the only other program to have multiple players in the top 10 is USC.
  • Has rushed for 100-plus yards in 13 of the last 23 games.
  • Has at least one rushing TD in 10 of the last 16 games and has two touchdowns in one game 10 times, rushed for 24 touchdowns in last 23 games
  • Needs 846 yards to rank among the top-10 for career rushing in the conference

Another record setting back.
ISU RB Josh Barnett is 845 yards away from becoming the all-time leading rusher in Idaho State history, despite skipping the first four games as a freshman. Barnett rushed for 136 yards against Southern Oregon, his 10th career 100-yard game, and he’s three of those away from tying Alfredo Anderson’s school record of 13.

Turnovers are killers.
The Beavers have struggled in the turnover category which has led to some short fields for their first two opponents to score. OSU is a negative-7 for turnovers this season; only North Carolina State at negative-8 is worse. OSU’s turnovers have led directly to 31 of its opponents’ 41 total points. Cincinnati also scored a touchdown after blocking a punt deep in Beaver territory -- not considered a turnover.

The opponents’ average starting point for a drive following an OSU turnover is the Beaver 28-yard line. The team posted a 5-6 record in 2005 when it was 113th for turnover margin and 10-4 last season when it was 24th. After all of this, the Beavers remain a respectable 47th in the nation for scoring defense at 20.5.

Over the last 39 games, Oregon State is 17-2 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent, 3-12 when committing more turnovers and 3-2 when even.

Additional notes.

  • No players were nominated for Pac-10 player of the week honors. P Dan Zeidman and S Terrance Callaway were named Big Sky Players of the Week.

  • Idaho State has four players on active NFL rosters - DE Jared Allen, Kansas City Chiefs, QB Matt Gutierrez, New England Patriots, DE Jeff Charleston, Indianapolis Colts and MLB Pago Togafau, Philadelphia Eagles. Oregon State has 13 players on active NFL rosters.

  • Idaho State was selected to finish eighth in the conference by the media. Oregon State was picked to finish fifth.

  • Oregon State is one of three Oregon schools on ISU's schedule. The other two schools are Southern Oregon and Portland State.

  • Dating back to last year, ISU has scored fourteen straight touchdowns on first and goal. The Bengals went a perfect 13-for-13 when presented with a first-and-goal situation, and all of those scores were touchdowns, last season. The Bengals over the last three seasons have scored 34 times in their last 35 first-and-goal opportunities, with 32 touchdowns.

  • ISU was whistled for 14 penalties for 150 yards against Southern Oregon. The Bengals were whistled for four personal fouls, including three celebration penalties.

  • Idaho State has not won a road opener since beating Cal Poly 28-22 in 1995. Idaho State has not started 2-0 since 1999.

  • The last time ISU was on Fox Sports NW, they defeated Portland State on Homecoming in 2001 23-17.

  • Oregon State has not allowed any fourth quarter points this year.

  • PK Alexis Serna has connected on a school-record 109 consecutive PATs. Pac-10 record is 139 (Jesse Ainsworth, ASU, 2003-06).

  • Oregon State’s three points at Cincinnati was its lowest since being shutout at USC Sept. 28, 2002. The Beaver offense hasn’t been held to back-to-back single digit games since Mike Riley’s first year in 1997 -- at Arizona (7) and vs. USC (0). During Riley’s second tenure, starting in 2003, OSU has failed to reach double digits only four times in 52 games.
