Beaver Bytes

The run down on Oregon State football and basketball news from the past week. Lots of Beaver basketball news inside...

  • There will be no desert vacation for an Oregon State defense that was scorched by UCLA on Saturday to the tune of 625 yards in a 43-35 loss to the Bruins at Reser Stadium.

Next up for the reeling Beavers (4-2, 0-2 Pac-10) is surprising Arizona State (4-2, 0-1), which blistered visiting North Carolina for 657 total yards in a 38-35 loss to the Tar Heels on Saturday night in ASU's non-conference finale...Beavers look for answers in desert

  • Kuykendall, an offensive tackle-turned-guard-turned-tackle, is studying to become an elementary school teacher.

You might be wondering, Why on earth would a massive offensive lineman, who takes pleasure in stuffing guys faces down in the turf, be so interested in educating these tiny tots a fraction of his size?

"It's a pretty vulnerable age, before they get to junior high...I want to reach them before they're Kings of the World," said Kuykendall...Kuykendall's versatility helps OSU line

  • Backup tailback Dwight Wright should be back in the mix on Saturday when the Oregon State football team attempts to half a two-game losing streak at Arizona State.

The stocky (5-9, 197) yet explosive (4.43) redshirt sophomore did not play in the 43-35 loss to UCLA this past Saturday. It was the first game this season that Wright, who coach Dennis Erickson said provides a nice change of pace from larger starter Steven Jackson, did not have at least five carries...OSU needs more of the Wright touch

  • Dennis Erickson's mantra this week to his Oregon State players speaks to his 30-plus years in coaching:

    "Hang together."

The Beavers are somewhat crestfallen after two weeks of disappointment against the Los Angeles schools — a 22-0 shutout at Southern California followed by Saturday's 43-35 loss to UCLA at Reser Stadium...
    Beavers keep hope afloat

  • I'd have bet six bits the Beavers wouldn't give up 43 points and more than 600 yards to anybody, much less the Bruins. Cory Paus picked the occasion to have a career day, but the Beavers put little pressure on him, and he threaded the needle a number of times in double coverage...Kerry says

  • Rather, the players presented a united front and promised despondent Beaver Believers everywhere that better results will be forthcoming Saturday when OSU (4-1, 0-1 Pac-10) aims for redemption against UCLA (3-1, 0-0)...Beavers aren't pointing fingers

  • Iowa State quarterback Seneca Wallace, who has emerged as a leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy, began his college career at Oregon State — sort of.

The Sacramento, Calif., native, a high school QB who wasn't heavily recruited, signed with the Beavers in 1998 and spent the summer in Corvallis conditioning with the OSU athletes. When camp opened in August, it was clear to coach Mike Riley that Wallace was special...
    OSU almost had Seneca Wallace

  • Inside the Washington State locker room, where you still could hear the roar of fans who wouldn't leave their seats, Cougars coach Mike Price was presented the game ball by star quarterback Jason Gesser. In this place called Pullman, no matter where they're tucked in this tucked-away part of the southeast corner of Washington, no one wanted to go home after the Cougars' throbbing, 30-27 overtime win against USC that stamped them a legit national player...Pac-10 tops nation's elite conferences

  • 7) Oregon State (4-2, 0-2) – If the Beavers want to contend for a decent bowl bid, they need to turn things around immediately. This is still a very good team. The Beaver offense looked as if it was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder during most of the UCLA game – thanks to the beating it took at USC. But, OSU came alive in the fourth quarter. If they can win a turnaround game this week at ASU, the Beavers still have the schedule and the talent to make a run. ...Ducks, Cougars Top Pac-10 Power Rankings

  • (On Arizona State) "They're a football team that's obviously very impressive, especially the last couple-three weeks, offensively. They made a quarterback change about halftime of the San Diego State game and brought in Andrew Walter, who, since then, has lit it up. He's thrown for over 400 yards against Stanford and North Carolina last week; he's a talented guy who can really throw it. Shaun McDonald may be the best receiver in our league, or one of the best ones - we've got a lot of good receivers in this league. The thing that he does is, he's so explosive and he makes so many darn things happen. He's got great speed and he's caught the deep ball for them; I think he's caught 30-some balls and the next guy has probably caught 13. He's just a real talented guy...Erickson Meets the Press | Dirk Koetter Meets the Press

  • Oregon State may throw Arizona State a curve this Saturday in an attempt to change up its fortunes following successive losses to start the Pacific-10 Conference football season.

The Beavers (4-2, 0-2 Pac-10) will streamline their playbook and become less predictable for the early season showdown with the Sun Devils (4-2, 1-0) at cavernous Sun Devil Stadium, where OSU is winless in the last 14 games of the series...OSU to shake up playbook

  • Oregon State takes a two-game losing streak to Arizona State this weekend, the product of a few lapses on defense but especially a stuttering offense. The Beavers' remedy will be to simplify their approach...Oregonian OSU Notebook

  • In that milestone football season of Oregon State's a couple of years ago, the Beavers had flags flying up there with all those banners.

The OSU single-season records for most penalties (115) and most yards penalized (1,065) were set in 2000 when the Beavers finished 11-1, shared the Pac-10 Conference championship, were ranked fourth in the nation and beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl...Register Guard OSU Notebook

  • "I want to develop what I consider to be attainable goals. I want to set priorities for today and go out and execute those to the best of our ability. To sit here and say that we should be here or there at certain times - I don't think that's the right way to go about things. I want this team to go out and execute the best that they can everyday, and we'll go from there. If we can just be as ready as possible to play every game, then I can live with that."...Jay John Q&A

  • Saturday's Pacific-10 Conference football game from Sun Devil Stadium between Oregon State and Arizona State will be streamed by the OSU Communication Media Center. The game begins at 7 p.m.

Computer users will need to load Real Player. The program is available for PC, Mac, and Unix users. A cable modem or DSL equivalent connectivity is required to view the contest. The game will air in its entirety, including commercials to satisfy contract obligations...Saturday's Football Game Available On-Line -- Television Change in Portland.

  • Nick Barnett watched the film of every inch of the 625 yards UCLA piled up against Oregon State last Saturday at Reser Stadium.

Barnett, an outside linebacker, said mental mistakes by the Beavers allowed the Bruins to make big play after big play in a 43-35 win, and the OSU coaching staff has been busy working out those problems...Big play takeaway

  • Noah Happe is a junior defensive end. His last name sounds like the emotion -- happy -- and it is both misleading and fitting. Teammates smile when they hear his name, but anyone who knows him says he can be ferocious and fearless.

"I was a crazy little kid, too," Happe said. "My mom was like, 'You're in God's hands.' She just left it to the angels, that's what she told me...Former walk-on has his own style

  • Most people who played sports in high school come to college, gain weight and become fans.

For others, like Erik Tuma, college is a place to continue their athletic careers and prove all their doubters wrong.

Erik certainly has done that...OSU's Erik Tuma continues his career

  • The great expectations created by Oregon State's 4-0 start have given way to a dose of Pacific-10 Conference reality.

Saturday's 43-35 loss to UCLA at Reser Stadium proved that a 22-0 defeat on Sept. 28 at USC was no aberration. The Beavers suddenly find themselves in the Pac-10 cellar with an assortment of questions...

The 6-foot-7, 253-pound senior is the Beavers' top returning scorer (16.2 pts) and rebounder (7.1). He is the only returning player in the conference to rank in the top-10 last year for scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots (1.46). He registered 41 blocked shots last season, the most at OSU since 1993...Philip Ricci highligted by National Publication

  • With just two shopping days before the official start of basketball season, new Oregon State basketball coach Jay John is still shopping — but preparing to unwrap the first team he can call his own.

"I'm loving every day of this opportunity," John said earlier this week. "This is the chance of a lifetime."...Several players still on John's shopping list

  • Division I basketball programs may officially begin practice Sat., Oct. 12. The team's first practice is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by 1 p.m. Sunday. Practices during the week will be held in the mornings, varying in times due to class schedules. • Those who missed out on the glossy, full-color yearbook that has recruiting fans buzzing across the country now have a second chance. TheInsiders.com has extended its offer of a free Recruiting Yearbook subscription with the purchase of annual Total Access Passes. The network also introduced a three-month Total Access Pass, which also will include a Yearbook subscription...Free Yearbook with 3-month pass

  • From my seat in Reser it appeared that we had gone away from the run after a few plays that went nowhere and depended on the passing game to win this one for us. As we all know, the passing game didn't win this one for us. As I sat down last night to watch the replay on television, I saw some things in Derek Anderson's play that, from the angle of my vantage point at the goal line, I didn't see as well on Saturday...Peyton Manning/Troy Aikman or Rick Mirer/Ryan Leaf

  • Jackson and Grant each record a sack while Cortez is a perfect 3-3 on field goals. NFL Beaver Update - Week 4

  • Former Beaver linebacker, James Allen, has been taken off of the Saints injury list and is expected to play this Sunday.
