PREVIEW: Maryland Special Teams

A solid kicker and punter along with the top kickoff coverage team in the nation.

THE TERRAPINS ON SPECIAL TEAMS
Special teams have been solid for the Terps despite breaking in three new starters.

True freshman punter Travis Baltz earned Sporting News freshman all-league honors after ranking seventh in the ACC in punting average (41.3).

Junior place-kicker Obi Egekeze has connected on 17 of 22 field goals, including 14 of the last 16 attempts. He has the leg to boot the big ones with a season long 49-yard strike against Florida State although he has missed all two of his attempts from 50-plus yards out.

Egekeze is a perfect 34 of 34 on extra points and has not had a kick blocked this year.

Senior Chris Roberts handles the kickoffs averaging nearly 60 yards per blast, with opponents' average starting point of drives at the 27-yard line.

Maryland's coverage has been kickoff fantastic as they rank first in the country in kickoff return yardage (16.1 ypr) and 42nd in punt return yardage defense (7.3 ypr).

Handling kickoff returning duties is redshirt freshman Da’Rel Scott, a back up running back, who is averaging 22.1 yards per return.

Safety Christian Varner and cornerback Anthony Wiseman split punt returns averaging 8 ypr and 6 ypr, respectively. The primary punt returner Danny Oquendo is injured.
