One more item on checklist for Bothell ATH

THE PUNTING DUTIES this past season were taken on by field goal kicker Alexis Serna. The Beavs lose the Lou Groza Award winner and former walk-on, however, to graduation and will field a new punter and kicker in '08. One candidate for the punting duties is John Hekker, a punter and quarterback out of Bothell, Wash. who was in on an official visit to OSU this weekend.

Hekker left Corvallis without a scholarship offer but the Beavs want to see more of the 6-5, 210-pounder in action.

I had a meeting with the coaches...and they wanted another highlight tape of me punting -- a couple shots from straight on, a couple shots from the side and then some wide angle shots.

With Signing Day only two days away, time would appear to be of the essence although it's really a Signing Period, with prep recruits able to sign Letters of Intent from Feb. 6 - April 1.

"They said after they get the video, they should be able to respond," said Hekker.

AS FOR THE weekend official to Corvallis, Hekker gave the experience a big thumbs up.

"Things went really well. I got a chance to meet with the coaches, see the campus, speak to the players and see what all they've got going on. It was really fun," said Hekker.

Hekker, who plans to major in Pharmacy, said the academics and support systems in place at Oregon State were noteworthy.

"Meeting with one of their academic advisers was (a highlight), it was a pretty good meeting. It was fun to see just all the different resources that they have to ensure their football players are successful both on the field and off," said Hekker.

ON THE '07 SEASON, Hekker kicked 21 punts for 771 yards (avg. 36.7) with a long of 57. He also served as the team's kicker, connecting on nine field goals and 31 PAT. He also was the man under center for Bothell.

As a quarterback, Hekker connected on 136 of 224 attempts (61 percent) for 1,981 yards, and threw 21 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Hekker led Bothell to a 13-1 record, and the 4A state title game for the second straight year in '07.

Hekker earned first team all-league honors at both punter and quarterback and was a second team all-league kicker in '07, and was named a White Chip by The Seattle Times in their annual recruiting rankings. He has been selected to play in the East-West all-star game later this year.

  • A versatile athlete, Hekker stars in both basketball and track (triple jump) for Bothell. He has a 32-inch vertical leap.
