Thursday it is

For the third consecutive year the Oregon State football season will kickoff on a Thursday as the team opens up the 2008 slate Aug. 28 in Palo Alto against the Stanford Cardinal

The Beavers have fared well in Stanford Stadium of late winning the last three contests with an average score of 28-15. The last time the Beavs lost to Stanford on the road was a narrow 21-17 contest in 1999. OSU has won six of its last seven against the Cardinal.

The game will mark the earliest Pac-10 contest in Oregon State history and the first time the Beavers have opened the year with a conference match-up since playing at Arizona State in 1994. OSU lost 22-16.

Oregon State holds a 2-14 record against Pac-10 opponents to begin a season. Both victories are against USC, a 14-0 win on the road in 1960 and a 20-0 triumph in Portland in 1957. OSU has started off two seasons playing Stanford, a 20-16 home loss in 1989 and a 12-0 road loss in 1939.

This is just the third time since the turn of the century, and the second time under Mike Riley, that the football team will start a season on the road. The last time the team opened a year on the road was in 2004 when they played LSU losing 22-21 in overtime. The 2004 squad finished 7-5 and played Notre Dame in the Insight Bowl.

Thursday games road games have not been kind to the Men in Black under Riley as they lost to Boise State 42-14 in 2006 and to Cincinnati 34-3 in 2007. OSU in 2-0 in Thursday home openers.
