VERBAL: Beavs land in-state hoss

IF THE EARLY indications are any measure, it's looking like a pretty good year in the Beaver State for linemen coming out of the prep ranks. Oregon State has received their first verbal commitment from an athletic 6-foot-5 hoss who earned first team all-state and all-league honors on both sides of the football during his junior campaign.

Oregon State was the first to offer John Braun, says prep coach Randy Nyquist, and the Gazette-Times reported Friday afternoon he had verbally committed to OSU. West Albany went undefeated and claimed their first state class 5A championship this past year. And one big reason why the offense averaged 43 points per game was the work of Braun up front.

"He was a key part of our football team, we were 14-0 and we ran the ball behind him quite often," Nyquist said.

Braun also helped lead a defense in '07 that surrendered a mere 5.4 points per game though his college future looks to be on the offensive side of the ball.

"He can pull and trap and can block rush ends. For a man his size he has very good feet...He's a pretty good defensive player...and I think if offensive line didn't work out for him, he could play on the other side of the ball," said Nyquist.

BRAUN's ATHLETICISM IS also evident on the hardcourt, said Nyquist, who also noted last year was Braun's first full year of playing football -- an injury limited him his sophomore year. Braun nevertheless earned first team all-state and all-league honors on both offensive and defensive lines following the season.

"For his size, he's extremely athletic. He could probably be a tight end type of kid but he's big enough and strong enough to play tackle," said Nyquist.

Nyquist said the senior-to-be had always held strong interest in Oregon State. At 6-5 and 245 pounds, he'll have some weight to put on at the next level but they haven't figured out a way to teach athleticism yet and Braun has the type of frame conducive to packing on weight and muscle, said Nyquist.

"As he grows and develops, he's going to physically look considerably different than he does now," said Nyquist.

Braun is the second known state of Oregon lineman to receive an offer from OSU. Charles Siddoway has also been offered a full ride by the Beavers.
