Spring ball: The newcomers

A host of new players on both sides of the ball will be participating in their first spring practice session. Here's who they are and where they fit within the football program.


QB Ryan Katz - Graduated early and will receive plenty of repetitions due to Sean Canfield's injured shoulder.

RB Jeremy Francis - Big tailback who loves contact, but has soft hands; will push McCants for starting spot.

OT Viliamu Nau - One of the largest players on the roster who is will be looked to fill out the two deeps at offensive tackle.

QB Zach Anderson - A 4A First Team selection in 2006 Anderson sat out an entire year for an opportunity to walk-on; will redshirt.

PK Tyler Cope - This former Jesuit Crusader can practice all he wants, but can't suit up as he transferred from the University of Colorado; must sit out 2008 due to NCAA transfer regulations.

OL Nick Lewis - Another Jesuit High graduate who was first team All-Metro League selection in 2006; will redshirt.

RB Jeff Sampson - The 6-1, 220-pound Sampson was a 2006 class 4A First Team linebacker and also played running back. He was a key figure in the Shrine Game for the East team and scored a fourth quarter touchdown.

TE Kevin Pankey - Brother of current Beaver linebacker Keith Pankey, strong potential to move to the offensive line, specifically tackle where he played in high school; will redshirt.

TE Colby Prince - A lanky, athletic tight end who has a 5A First Team All-State pick as a senior in 2006; enrolled in January and needs to add some muscle, will redshirt.

OT Rory Ross - Ross was a second team all-league selection as a senior; also played tight end at Peoria High School; will benefit greatly from OSU muscle building program, will redshirt.



P Sean Sehnem - After connecting on 15 of 20 field goal attempts and 20 of 23 extra point tries for Western New Mexico State Sehnem has elected to take a step up from Division II to Division I where he will compete for staring punting duties; a second team preseason All-America pick by Lindy's Magazine in '07.

CB Brain Watkins - The twin brother of linebacker Anthony Watkins; enrolled in January and will redshirt.

DT Jesse Fifita - Fifita started his sophomore and junior seasons at defensive end for Menlo-Atherton High School, before suffering a season ending injury early in the 2006 season; will likely redshirt.

DT Stephen Paea - With excellent strength and power Paea has three to play three and will be in the mix at defensive tackle.

DE Taylor Henry - Henry accounted for 37 sacks over his final two seasons and earned All-CIF Southern Section honors as a senior at Campbell High School; will redshirt.

DT Castro Masaniai - Cousin of current Beaver Tonu Tuimalealiifano, earned all-league honors on both sides of the ball and honorable mention all-state as a senior at Waipahu High School; will likely redshirt.

S Josh LaGrone - LaGrone was the High Desert League Player of the Year in 2006 while playing for McQueen High School; also a standout receiver and kick returner, a likely redshirt candidate.

LB Anthony Watkins - Watkins was a ’06 first team all-league quarterback and second team safety, will redshirt.
