Incoming Beav excels on and off the field

FUTURE OREGON STATE Beaver Jovan Stevenson has been nominated by the Tucson Citizen for their 2008 Student Athlete Award. The award is given annually to a student athlete who excels on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Stevenson holds a 3.524 grade point average and ranks 52nd in his class of 405 students. The two time football team captain was named a first team running back by both the Tucson Citizen and the Arizona Daily Star while also earning first team all state honors.

His list of achievements on the gridiron continues as he was No. 1 with all purpose yards for 5A in 2007 and was named player of the week seven times in the last two years.

He helped lead Sunnyside to a Class 5A Division II semifinal berth this past season. He rushed for 1,470 yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior after gaining 1,863 yards and 14 touchdowns his junior season.

At school, he is involved with the Student Advisory Council and a member of the Black Heritage Month Committee.

In the community, Stevenson reads to elementary students on game days, hosts younger students for an Arizona Cardinal Recreation Day and does landscaping.
