"We're in the playoffs right now," Schmich told Dawgman.com when asked how Clackamas is doing. "We beat South Salem 38-20 and we're playing McMinnville in the next round." Zach is playing guard right now but can play mostly anywhere. He also plays NG on defense but feels his future on offense." He's a good-sized player in his own right, but next to 6-10, 350-pound Adonal Airington, Schmich looks positively tiny. "We call him Junior," he said of Airington. "We play right next to each other. We run a lot of screens so the running back can hide right behind us."
College coaches love what Zach brings to the table as a player. "They like my size and how I get downfield and block and how I block through the whistle," he said. Washington and Portland State are the schools that seem to be paying Schmich the most attention right now. "I've been to Washington a couple times. I went to Portland State. I've also looked at Oregon and Oregon State." He doesn't have a scholarship offer yet but Portland State looks set to pull the trigger and offer soon.
Zach doesn't have any trips set up, but that's his decision. "I'm thinking about after the season," he said. "That's when I'll really go look."
Randy Hart is the coach recruiting Schmich for the Huskies. "He's really into talking to me," he said. "He said that he's coming down around Thanksgiving to talk with my coach." Zach has also spoken with another Oregonian, Spencer Marona, about his time with the Dawgs. "He played at Lakeridge, and we got to talking and he's been watching the Three Rivers League, see how the teams are doing."
Schmich has two in mind
