PRACTICE REPORT: Spirited outing, Riley audio

CORVALLIS -- The Beavs might not play again until a week from Thursday but there was plenty of work out on the practice field on Tuesday. Sean Canfield threw the furthest, and longest, he has in some time. And this spirited practice session was about quality, not quantity. There's also audio, six minutes worth, from Mike Riley who talked Moevao-Morales chemistry, Canfield, USC and more.

  • Rather than running through a lot of plays, the Beaver offense practiced limited the number, getting in a few extra reps than usually seen.

  • Indeed, every single play was scrutinized by the coaches, the result sometimes being that the plays were repeated a handful of times as Oregon State worked on trying getting everything perfect, right down to the very last detail.

  • Dwight Roberson saw a good amount of turns with the first team defense on Tuesday at the weakside linebacker position. Mike Riley had said coming out of the Penn State game the coaches took notice of how he played in Happy Valley and would be looking to incorporate him into the defense more. Roberson had one tackle against UH while starter Keith Pankey logged three, with one for loss.

  • The defense as a whole had a relatively good day, with a handful of picks and pass break-ups. Corner Brandon Hughes had a solid outing, he was both consistent and active throughout the session.

  • The offense has been proficient this year in their hurry up, and they continued to work on more of it Tuesday, presumably looking to keep that fine edge over the bye week.

  • Practice time for the first team offense and defense moved towards work against the respective scout teams relatively quickly on Tuesday, and majority of the session was spent there.

  • Tuesday saw an encouraging step from Sean Canfield, who probably took the most reps he has all year. Canfield threw a good number of passes against the defensive scout teamers, including a couple of semi-deep throws.

  • Defensive coordinator Mark Banker was animated throughout the session.

  • He's slated to redshirt this year but keep an eye out -- the Beavs look to have a good one in WR Jordan Bishop. He continues to turn heads, often on the scout team against the No. 1 defense.

  • Kickers Sean Sehnem and Matt Barker did the kicking duties with Justin Kahut (hip) sidelined for the week. Riley said he's questionable for USC at this point but also sounded optimistic he could be ready by Saturday to resume practicing.

  • FS Greg Laybourn (stinger) was suited up though with plenty of time before the USC game, he was eased into things.

  • The special teams saw work from all three punters on Tuesday; starter John Hekker, Sean Sehnem and Ryan Allen.
