QUOTES: "I just stepped up"

QUOTES FROM MIKE Riley, Sean Canfield and Jacquizz Rodgers following their third straight conference victory, a thrilling 27-25 win over Arizona State Nov. 1.

Oregon State Head Coach Mike Riley

Opening Statement...
“I am really proud of our team and our coaches. As everyone saw, everything wasn’t going perfectly and it wasn’t clicking exactly; it was hard. Coach (Dennis) Erickson had his group really cranked up and their defense played well and their offense played well. It was a difficult game, but our guys never quit, never blinked, never got tight and they just tried to keep making plays. They had a great drive at the end of the game with a great play by Victor Butler.”

On Sean Canfield...
“He has improved almost day-to-day throughout these last few weeks, but it does take time for him to get all of the velocity back that he had. He was certainly capable of making the plays he needed to tonight. It has been a long time since he has played, and I think there was a lot of raw emotion coming out tonight with just the excitement of playing and making some plays. When he threw that interception it turned the game for everyone, but the plays he made after that took a lot of courage and a lot of poise and I was really proud of him.”

On the offensive line...
“This was as good of a defensive front as we have seen, one of the best anyway, so we knew it was going to be hard. I was really proud of the way the line played and they stayed with it. We had to stay with the running game either, but we hit enough runs and enough passes so we could stay balanced and it turned into a pretty good football game. Our offensive line did a great job. We were averaging one sack a game and I think that is what we got tonight.”

Running Back Jacquizz Rogers

On second half adjustments ...
“We went into the locker room and made some changes to shore up the defense.”

On adjusting to a new quarterback ...
“Sean [Canfield] stepped up to the plate and made some big plays for us and we were able to come away with a victory.”

On the running game ...
“I was just trying to keep my feet moving in the pile, and to find a seam to run through.”

On potentially playing in the Rose Bowl ...
“We are just trying to win the rest of our games and what happens is what happens.”

Quarterback Sean Canfield

On Lyle Moevao being injured and coming into the game ...
“I just stepped up. It’s finally a time for me to step in when I’m healthy and I took advantage of the opportunity. The team played great and it was a hard fought game.”

On adjustments in the second half ...
“We really just calmed down. There weren’t that many drastic changes. We started running the ball really well and made some throws down field. It really opened it up for us.”

On Arizona State’s comeback in the final minutes ...
“That’s the last person [Rudy Carpenter] you want on the field with two minutes left and down by a touchdown. He’s a great player and we saw what he did. That’s a talented ASU defense and they’re a lot better than their record shows.”

On getting the victory and moving potentially to a Rose Bowl berth ...
“That’s always in the back of our heads but something that our team has really bought into is that it’s one week at a time and that’s really what it is.”
