IT WAS SIMPLE. Win and go to the Rose Bowl for a rematch with Penn State. Unfortunately for the Beaver Nation, Oregon State's fourth loss of the year makes the bowl picture a little murkier for the Men in Black.

First, lets get the most unlikely scenario out of the way.

There is a small chance that the Beavers could still go to the Rose Bowl. But that would require 4-7 UCLA knocking off No. 5 USC.

Granted the Bruins are playing at home where they knocked off USC in 2006, but the Trojans have opened as 27 point favorites and UCLA's offense has been woeful this season.

If the Bruins were to somehow knock off the Trojans though, Oregon, USC and Oregon State would all finish with 7-2 conference records.

OSU owns the tiebreaker over the Trojans, USC over the Ducks and UO over the Beavers. Under current Pac-10 tie break rules, the Beavs would get the Rose Bowl berth.

Now onto the more likely scenario.

If the Trojans win next Saturday, USC goes to the Rose Bowl, the Ducks go to the Holiday Bowl and the Beavers go to the Sun Bowl for the second time in the last three years.

The Sun Bowl is played on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 11:00 AM PST. For more information visit

There are different opinions on who Oregon State would face in the Sun Bowl. and project West Virginia (7-4) while, CBS Sportsline, NBC Sports say No. 23 Pittsburgh (8-3).

If Pittsburgh loses at UConn (7-4) next weekend, West Virginia would probably be the Beavers' opponent. If Pitt, as expected, beats UConn, then Pitt probably goes to the Sun Bowl.

There is also a small chance that OSU could face Notre Dame.

If Rutgers is upset by Louisville, then the Sun Bowl is free to take the Irish as the Big East would only have five bowl eligible teams.
