Beavers Receive 2nd QB Commitment

Oregon State received its second commit from a QB. Once again, Dennis Erickson and his staff show the ability to find players in non-traditional places.

Danny Southwick, a 2000 Timpview High School(Provo, Utah) graduate, was expected to enroll at BYU this January. But after returning from a two-year LDS mission, the 6-foot-4, 215 pounder decided to look elsewhere.

"I decided to go to Oregon State because Dennis Erickson's program would give me the best opportunity to meet my goal of playing professional football someday," Southwick told the Provo Daily Herald. "Dennis Erickson's scheme at Oregon State fits my game and it's very similar to what we ran in high school."

Because Southwick did not enroll at BYU before leaving on his mission, he will have four full years of eligibility, and a redshirt available.

Southwick has some interesting family ties, as well. His uncle, quarterback Bret Engemann, recently announced he was forgoing his senior year of eligibility at BYU and entering the NFL draft. Southwick is also the stepson of CNN's Larry King.

Southwick was also interested in Penn State and Texas A&M.
