Shipp Happens

A scrappy performance by the Beavers (7-6, 0-4) could not propel them past the hot shooting Bears (10-2, 3-0) Saturday night in front of 9,628 at Haas Pavilion.

Cal forward Joe Shipp scored a career high 35 points to propel California to a 78-73 victory.

The Beavers were down 17-8 early in the first half and were in danger of being blown out when they put together a 16-6 run to take a 24-23 lead at the 6:00 minute mark.

California responded with a small run of their own, backed by hot three point shooting, and bumped the lead up to 9 by halftime.

Oregon State struggled at the beginning of the second half by committing 6 turnovers in the first five minutes. To compound the turnover problem, freshman guard Lamar Hurd, who finished with 6 assisits, fouled out with 13:47 left to go in the game.

But the Beavers kept their composure and relied on the hardworking senior Philip Ricci and the hot shooting freshman Chris Stephens.

With under 11:00 minutes to go Cal forward Amit Tamir was injured while shooting a three-pointer and sat out the rest of the game.

The Beavers were down by as many as 15 points in the second half but did not give up. Tenacious defense forced the Bears into numerous bad shots late in the shot clock giving the Beavers a chance to stay in the game.

Jimmie Haywood hit a three point shot from the top of the key at the 9:45 mark to cut the Cal lead to 7. Before Haywood's three pointer he had gone 50 minutes without a basket.

But California always had an answer, usually from three point range. Time after time the Bears would need a big shot and Shipp would deliver.

With 2:18 left in the game J.S. Nash hit a three point shot from the corner to cut the lead to 60-69. Haywood would steal the ball the next play and pass to Stephens who would hit his third three of the night to cut the lead to 6.

After an excellent defensive effort by the Beavers they had a chance to cut the lead to three. Stephens shot a three from the corner, but the ball rimmed out and the Beavers were forced to foul.

Cal's inability to hit free throw shots at the end gave the Beavers a shot at tying the game, especially when Stephens hit a 23-footer with 12.7 seconds left to go cutting the lead to 73-77.

But Joe Shipp would end up making 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to ice the game and give Cal a hard fought victory.
