Six OSU baseballers picked in MLB Draft

SIX OREGON STATE baseball players were chosen in the three day MLB Draft. And five Oregon State recruits, both in football and baseball, were also selected. - Oregon State has now had at least one player selected in the draft the last 17 years, which includes all 15 years under head baseball man Pat Casey.

Oregon State draft choices: Ryan Ortiz (6th round - Oakland), Jorge Reyes (17th round - San Diego), Kraig Sitton (17th round - Boston), Joey Wong (24th round - Colorado), Greg Peavey (32nd round - Houston) and Adalberto Santos (35th round - San Diego).

The Oregon State recruits selected: Kyrell Hudson (3rd round - Philadelphia), Andrew Susac (16th round - Philadelphia), Tony Bryant (25th round - Minnesota), Jordan Poyer (42nd round - Florida) and Jeff Ames (46th round - Philadelphia).

The draft spanned 50 rounds with 1,421 selections made, and a total of 11 players with ties to Oregon State were selected.

- The last year an OSU player was not selected in the draft was 1992. Overall, the Beavers have had at least one player selected in every year of the draft except 1992, 1985, 1979, 1978, 1976, 1973 and 1972.

- The Beavers have had multiple draft selections in each of the last nine seasons.

- Ryan Ortiz going in the sixth round gave Oregon State 22 players selected in the top nine rounds under head coach Pat Casey.

- Oregon State has produced 62 different draft selections in Casey's 15 years -- an average of more than four per season. Thirty-one of those 62 picks have been pitchers.

- In the last five drafts, since the Beavers' 2005 appearance at the College World Series, there have been 34 different selections of Oregon State players.

- Ortiz's selection by Oakland made him the first Beaver to be taken by the Athletics since Mike Gorman in 1982.

- Both Adalberto Santos and Jorge Reyes were selected by San Diego, giving the Beavers multiple draft selections by the same team in the same year for just the sixth time. Most recently, that happened in 2007 when Daniel Turpen and Joe Paterson were both taken by San Francisco.

- Ortiz, Reyes and Sitton all were selected by MLB clubs for the first time. Wong, Peavey and Santos were drafted for the second time.

- Joey Wong, a native of Salem, was selected in the 24th round. That makes it seven straight years in which an Oregon native and an Oregon State player has been selected in the draft.

- For the first time since 2005, an Oregon State player failed to be drafted in consecutive drafts.
