AUDIO: Riley on 95.5 The Game

COACH MIKE RILEY recently called into The Bald Face Truth to talk football with John Canzano. Among others things talk turned to Jacquizz Rodgers shoulder to which Riley said, "He has had a great off season. I have been told he is 100%. We've had doctors look at it many times. We sent it out for many opinion - I feel real good about that."

Other topics included:

  • Quizz's role with the team - "I would like to expand his role in the passing game. He could catch 15-20 more balls than he did last year. That would really help balance us out with that position."

  • Jovan Stevenson taking over Ryan McCants as backup - "He only did because of Ryan's injury in spring ball. If Ryan is healthy we may redshirt Jovan. Jovan did a nice job for a freshman coming in January. It was a very good spring for him. Ryan would be a solid backup to Quizz if we get to that point."

  • Starting slow each year, do anything different this year? - "As I have looked through practice schedules that is the first thing I think about because you would like to think you could come out of the gate effectively. I am looking at changing the first parts of practice. I want to slow down the wear down process and pay attention to what we do early in camp."

  • Brandon Hardin, inexperience in secondary, can it be masked? - "Brandon is a tremendous prospect. I say prospect because we will still go through fall camp to see who will be starters. He's got that nice frame, those long arms and he can run. It can be masked a little bit through pressure. That works if we are getting a good pass rush from the front four and from blitzes. In the end though you have be sound and play out there in space."

  • A surprise player who will make some noise - "I don't know if it would be a total surprise, but Darrell Catchings. He had a terrific spring. We need that guy to be a playmaker. We have had that guy over the years - weather it be Mike Hass or James Newson or Sammie Strougther - however he is played makes a big difference in the quarterback's progression."

  • FYI: Listen to the whole clip for a surprise guest at the end.
