Bay area sleeper wakes up in Corvallis

Phil Ghilarducci, a 6-4, 190-pound athlete from Palo Alto (Calif.) Gunn has verbally committed to Oregon State, according to Gunn football coach Sam Picture.

"Sam wasn't heavily recruited at all during the season," Picture told TheInsiders Tuesday morning. "But once the season was over, we put together a highlight tape and sent it out to schools and went to clinics and hand delivered it to coaches to get the word out. As soon as they saw the tape, things started happening.

"With the Oregon State coach, he saw the film on Saturday and flew down Monday to talk to Phil. Washington came to talk to him. Oregon came to talk to him. Utah talked to him. Oregon State, UNLV and Utah offered him full scholarships. He visited UNLV two weeks ago and Oregon State last weekend and he committed to Oregon State."

So what was on that film that all of a sudden got the coaches' attention? "Well, Phil is a three-year starter for us at receiver and free safety," Picture said. "He had 6 interceptions and 16 touchdowns. He had 84 catches for 1034 yards. He blocked two PAT's and two punts, one he returned for a touchdown. He runs a 4.45 40.

"Basically he's a high impact player. He's the guy that makes a big play for your team, the kind that fires up your team and feeds off his play."
