FOR THE FIRST time in Las Vegas Bowl history, two ranked teams will crack pads. In fact, the Las Vegas Bowl is just one of four non-BCS bowl games to feature ranked foes in Oregon State (Nos. 16, 20) and BYU (Nos. 14, 15). BYU is looking to notch its 11th win of the year while OSU hopes to extend Mike Riley's five game bowl win streak and finish the season on a high note and ranked in the Top 15.

OSU started its current five-game bowl win streak with a 55-14 victory over New Mexico Dec. 24, 2003. In the game OSU junior running back and Las Vegas native Steven Jackson scored a bowl game record five touchdowns, including four on the ground, and finished with 149 yards rushing and 51 yards receiving.

BYU totaled 444 yards of total offense compared to Arizona’s 416, but the No. 16 Cougars fell short of their third-straight bowl victory Saturday, falling 31-21 to the Arizona Wildcats in the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium.

“You have to give Arizona a lot of credit,” said BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall, whose teams have won at least 10 games each of the past three seasons. “I thought in those critical moments, Arizona made plays. BYU went 4-2 vs. 2009 bowl teams. The Cougars got past Oklahoma (14-13), Wyoming (52-0), Air Force (38-21) and Utah (26-23 OT) but lost to Florida State (54-28) and TCU

Oregon State went 3-4 against teams playing in bowl games this season. The Beavers defeated UCLA (26-19), Stanford (38-28) and California (31-14) and lost to Oregon (33-37), Cincinnati (18-28), Arizona (37-32) and USC (36-42).

OSU and BYU have met eight times previous, but not since Nov. 15, 1986 when the Beavers upset the Cougars 10-7 in Provo. In that game, BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall was a junior starting safety for the Beavers and made four tackles.

OSU also has victories over the Cougars of 34-0 (1955), 35-0 (1961), 29-3 (1972) and 24-19 (1977). BYU was ranked No. 13 in the 1977 game. BYU’s victories include 31-13 (1967), 37-14 (1973) and 10-6 (1978

The Beavers won the first meeting between the two schools in 1955, 33-0.

Coach Mike Riley is 5-0 as a head coach in bowl games while Bronco Mendenhall is 2-2.

BYU connections.
Numerous connections between the two programs, including as mentioned before BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall was a safety at OSU in 1986 and ’87 (team captain) and then served as a defensive graduate assistant coach in 1989 and ’90, defensive line coach in 1995 and as defensive coordinator in ‘96.

BYU offensive line coach Mark Weber served in the same capacity at OSU from 1987-90. BYU standout running back Harvey Unga is the cousin of OSU freshmen Kevin and Devin ‘Unga. BYU defensive lineman Vic So’oto was a high school teammate of Sean Canfield at Carlsbad High.


A Las Vegas Bowl first.
Oregon State enters the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas No. 16 in the latest Associated Press Poll, No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 18 in the BCS Poll. BYU is No. 15 in the AP, and No. 14 in the USA Today and BCS. This is the first time in the bowl’s history a pair of ranked teams have faced off.

The game is also one of four non-BCS bowl games to feature a contest between AP ranked teams – the others are No. 14 Miami vs. No. 24 Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl; No. 22 Arizona vs. No. 20 Nebraska in the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl; and No. 11 Penn State vs. No. 13 LSU in the Capital One Bowl.

This year’s MAACO Bowl Las Vegas will be only the third time since 1999 the Beavers will face an opponent that is ranked in the AP Poll in a bowl – OSU beat No. 19 Pitt in last year’s Sun Bowl (3-0) and No. 10 Notre Dame in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl (41-9).

Oregon State is playing in its ninth bowl game in the last 11 seasons, tied for the second most over that span in the Pac-10 with USC. Oregon has appeared in 10 bowls, followed by OSU and USC, UCLA (7), California (7), Arizona State (7), Washington (4), Stanford (3), Washington State (3) and Arizona (2).
