RANKINGS: A very early look at Beavs

THERE'S STILL OVER a half of a year before the 2010 college football season kicks off, but a few people have already put up their early top 25 polls. ESPN.com's Mark Schlabah has the Beavers at No. 20, and CFN puts Oregon State at No. 33. And three others have the Beavs in the Top 20.

CFN says, "The Beavers will be chock full of returning starters, including the Rodgers brothers, James and Quizz, so a regression is not expected in 2010."

2010 opponents that CFN ranked higher than OSU include Stanford (32) and TCU (18).

The website hasn't released its top 15 yet, but almost assuredly Boise State, Oregon and possibly USC will make an appearance in the top 15.

ESPN's Mark Schlabah puts the Men in Black at No. 20 saying, "During the past four years, few teams have been as consistent as Oregon State, which finished in the top three of the Pac-10 standings every season.

"With nine starters coming back on both offense and defense, there is no reason to believe the Beavers will take a step back in 2010."

The ESPN analyst has two of Oregon State's 2010 opponents in his top five with Boise State at No. 3 and Oregon at No. 4.  Other opponents in his top 25 include TCU (8) and USC (21).

Other polls from around the web that have the Beavs ranked include Jon Wilner of the Mercury News with OSU at No. 19, About.com with Oregon State at No. 14 and NationalChamps.net with the Beavers at No. 17.

IN OTHER NEWS, A couple of former Oregon State stars have been hired as coaches.  Defensive tackle Alvin Smith has been hired as the defensive line coach at Portland State while Aric Williams was hired by the University of Montana as its cornerbacks coach.
