Beavs' upset bid falls short at Pauley

OREGON STATE HAD momentum in their corner. But after nearly erasing all of a 10-point halftime deficit, and climbing to within a single point with about five minutes remaining, UCLA ripped off five quick points. OSU played catch-up the rest of the way, unable to climb over the final hurdles in a 65-56 loss on the hardcourt at Pauley Pavilion.

Joe Burton had a double-double in the loss, with 13 points and 11 boards.

Calvin Haynes led the Beavs with 14 points but was just 4-for-16 from the field.

On the night, the Beavs shot 33.3 percent but were still somehow in position to pull off the upset when Roeland Schaftenaar hit a deuce and was fouled on the play. His foul shot cut it to 50-49 with 4:42 remaining.

Five quick UCLA points looked like a dagger to push the lead back to six, but Calvin Haynes drilled a trey to slice that lead in half. But it was OSU's final charge and the Beavers couldn't capitalize on successive trips down the floor.

Haynes' three was an anomaly on the night for the Beavers. Oregon State shot a stark 3-for-21 (14.3 percent) from three point land against UCLA.

The Bruins, meanwhile, were shooting over 50 percent from the floor against the Beaver D at halftime before OSU mounted their second half comeback bid. Oregon State's 2-3 zone defense seemed a step slow all night, not rotating over quickly enough and giving UCLA too many open looks.

Lathen Wallace was the only other Beaver in double figures, scoring 11. Jared Cunningham scored six points on 3-for-5 shooting.
