Bruins outlast Beavers in Corvallis

A pair of seniors led the UCLA Bruins over the Oregon State Beavers Thursday night in front of 6,521 OSU faithful at Gill Coliseum.

Jason Kapono had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Ray Young added 19 points and nine boards to propel the Bruins to a crucial 69-66-road victory.

The win puts the Bruins in tie with Washington for the very important eighth place in conference, with both teams trailing OSU and USC by a single game.

The Beavers put four players in double figures, led by Philip Ricci's 15.

OSU was strong in the post all night as David Lucas had 10 points all on jump- hooks and tip-ins.

"It seems in the games the Beavers lose they miss their free throws in the end of the game," said Beaver Dam member Alex Snowden.

The Beavs were weak from the free throw line hitting on only 11-of-18 attempts, 61.1%.

With OSU down a game-high eight points with 12:09 to go in the second half Jimmie Haywood had a breakaway lay-in opportunity taken away by a flagrant foul from T.J. Cummings. Haywood hit one of two free throws and by rule the Beavers retained possession. Floyd North III received the ball on the left wing, drove to the basket and was fouled as he went up for the shot, and he, like Haywood, hit one of two from the line. Had each player connected on both free throws, the Bruin lead would have been just four.

With 1:07 to play a Brian Jackson three pointer made the score 64-63 for UCLA and the crowd was in a frenzy.

The game looked to be going to the Beavers at that point. "When Jackson hit that three at the end I thought we had them," said Beaver Dam member David Choquette.

Little did Choquette and the rest of Beaver Nation know, UCLA would go on a quick five-zip run before Haywood hit a three with two seconds to go to round out the scoring.

Young got a big offensive rebound and put it in to give UCLA a three-point lead with 46 seconds to play. Thirty seconds later Haywood got called for a flagrant foul at mid court and Ryan Hollins sunk one of two from the charity stripe.

With 10.3 left Kapono threw an alley-oop to Dijon Thompson to give the Bruins a six-point lead to seal the game. Joining Ricci and Lucas in double figure was Jackson with 10, as Haywood added 14 points and a season-high six assists. The Beavers passed the ball well having 17 assists, as a team, on 24 made field goals.

"It was nice to see a competitive home game for once," said Choquette.
