Beavs take opener in critical series

SO FAR, SO GOOD. Oregon State out on the baseball diamond jumped out to an early lead, paving the way for a W in Game 1 of the regular season-ending three game series against Arizona on Friday. Senior left fielder Adalberto Santos provided the power, going yard not once but twice in the 6-3 win.

Santos' contributions were especially welcome on Friday, as the Oregonian reported the Beavs' leading power hitter, Stefen Romero, is done for the season with a fractured right forearm.

On the field, junior RHP Greg Peavey scattered seven hits in 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs for the Beavers (30-21, 11-14).

Junior RHP Tyler Waldron got the save, working the final 1 1/3 innings against Arizona (32-21, 11-14).

Win the victory, Oregon State won for the eighth time in their last 12 games.

Oregon State and UA meet for Game 2 Saturday at 2 p.m. PT. The game will be televised live on FSN Northwest. In the Corvallis and Eugene areas, tune to KEZI 9.2.

The Beavs' starter was unknown after last night's win. Had OSU lost, Pat Casey was planning on going with sinkerballer Sam Gaviglio. Now, he may push his start to Sunday.

Arizona, once considered a lock for the postseason, is trying to remove any doubt with a series win over OSU after losing their last four straight weekend series. The Wildcats, despite their recent slide, still entered the week with a rock-solid RPI of 20. Anything under 30 is generally considered to be all but assured of an at-large bid to the field of 64.
