2010 PREVIEW: Arizona

PLAYERS AND COACHES will downplay it, emphasizing that it's a new year. And there's merit to what they'll say. But last year's loss to Arizona was a killer, and it's hard to believe OSU won't be a team in search of payback in the first Pac-10 road game of the season for OSU. As for the 2010 Wildcats, look closely. There are reasons some are tabbing them a darkhorse candidate to win the Pac-10.

 The Word on the Wildcats

Mike Stoops begins his seventh year at Arizona with new coordinators on offense and defense, an unexpected transition that he says reflects favorably on the Wildcats' first back-to-back bowl appearances since 1997-98. To match or top last year's total of eight wins, quarterback Nick Foles needs to repeat his 2009 production and the Wildcats need to identify some playmakers at linebacker. The rest of the club, barring injuries, is established... Athlon

Arizona is stuck in a logjam in the middle of the Pac-10, whose denizens include the Wildcats, U.C.L.A, California and Stanford. I'll hedge my bets by saying Arizona is certainly capable of finishing ahead of that latter trio; even as high as third, should the defense round into form. With their questions, however, this is a logical spot... PreSnapRead.com

After laboring for years, Stoops finally has Arizona out of choppy waters. Now what? In the ultra-competitive Pac-10, the coach hopes to build on last year's regular season, completely forget the postseason, and guide the Wildcats to a third straight bowl game for just the second time in school history... CFN

In regards to an "under the radar" team to win the conference championship, Arizona can get it done... Arizona's offense will put up points, and it's difficult to ever underestimate a Mike Stoops-coached defense. Co-defensive coordinator Tim Kish is an excellent strategist and new defensive backs coach and fellow defensive coordinate Greg Brown plans to introduce some new, more aggressive schemes to Arizona's traditional Cover 2 defense. If the stars align, defensively, Arizona is potent enough in other areas (offense and special teams) to make a serious run... Wildcat Sports Report

The Wildcats lost both coordinators during the offseason... They were both replaced by co-coordinators: Bill Bedenbaugh (offensive line) and Seth Littrell (running backs and tight ends) on offense and Tim Kish (linebackers) and Greg Brown (secondary) on defense. Littrell will call the offensive plays. Brown is the only one of the four who is new to the staff... ESPN

The Wildcats play a winnable schedule and are deep at nearly every position except linebacker. Conference-wide respect will have to come later... Arizona Daily Star

There isn't too much intrigue heading into fall camp, though the pecking order at defensive tackle is worth watching. As for the official depth chart, Vaughn Dotsy and Jovon Hayes are competing at right guard as are Phillip Garcia and Jack Julsing at right tackle. Is Nic Grigsby going to stay healthy and remain No. 1 ahead of Keola Antolin at tailback? The weakside LB spot is unsettled between Paul Vassallo and R.J. Young... ESPN
