Ducks are No. 1

For the first time in the history of Oregon football, the Oregon Ducks are the No. 1 team in the nation, at least according to the USA/ESPN/Coaches' and AP Polls released on Sunday morning. Although Oregon was idle this week and won't play until Thursday night's game at Autzen Stadium against UCLA, the moment is one to remember for the Ducks and their fans.

On Saturday the Ducks held an open practice and the looked like a team that should be the tops in the country. Darron Thomas was back in his usual spot leading the starters and showed no ill effects of a shoulder injury that took him out of the Washington State game.

"I felt good," Thomas said after practice. "No problems at all."

Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly does not discuss injuries but the football program does publish an injury update daily and for Saturday the only two players listed was sophomore running back Kenjon Barner (head) and redshirt freshman tackle Everett Benyard (ankle). Barner was at practice but was not in pads. After being taken off the playing field at Martin Stadium in an ambulance, Barner stayed overnight at Pullman Regional Hospital then returned to Eugene where he spent another night in a hospital for observation. The Ducks have not released anymore information regarding Barner's exact injury. Benyard has missed all the season with the ankle injury and is in a walking cast.

The flight to the top of the polls resulted from Ohio State's 31-18 loss to Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium, Wisconsin.
