1. No new news came forth after practice today with regard to the condition of senior backup quarterback Nate Costa, who went down with a seemingly serious knee injury in the second half of the Ducks' 53-16 win over the Washington Huskies this past Saturday. According to Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, Costa's injury would be evaluated further later today.
"Nate's got a doctor's appointment today and we'll figure it out after that, so that's where he's at," said Kelly.
2. With Costa's status looking questionable if not bleak, true freshman Bryan Bennett has emerged as the likely second stringer behind starter Darron Thomas. Bennett received the vast majority of the snaps with the second unit this morning and looked very efficient, demonstrating tremendous accuracy and velocity on all of his throws. In assessing Bennett today, Kelly did little to play up the true frosh's performance.
"He was ok," said Kelly. "He was good."
Thomas, however, was a little more effusive in evaluating Bennett this morning.
"He came out and did a good job," said Thomas. "He can throw the ball really well and he's got a good spiral. He came out and did better than I thought he was going to do."
3. When asked if he would try to maintain Bennett's redshirt status in the event Oregon held a big lead late in the game, Kelly said that they would try to manage it the same way they managed Thomas' redshirt season last year, citing the UCLA game where Thomas backed up Costa.
4. Not only is the backup quarterback position in question, but maybe more importantly at this juncture, the starting position as holder on place kicks is up for grabs. According to Kelly, Thomas and sophomore Jackson Rice will vie for that duty even though Rice finished the game for the Ducks on Saturday. Thomas said that, even without Costa, little would change as far as the Ducks' aggressiveness in going for two after touchdowns.
"We're gonna come out and do the same things and not change up nothing," said Thomas. "We're gonna try to get the same two-point conversion (opportunity) and things like that."
Oregon Offical Injury Report:
DT Brandon Bair (leg), QB Nate Costa (knee), DB Marcus Davis (knee), WR Jeff Maehl (arm)
Add: Both Bair and Maehl were in standard issue practice uniforms today, though Maehl wasn't in pads this morning.
