Update on Elite Guards

We ran into Gabriel Pruitt, 6-3 JR SG Los Angeles (Calif.) Westchester, last night at the Pangos Premier League in Long Beach and asked about his latest list.

"Kansas, Arizona, Maryland, Oklahoma, Oregon and UCLA," said Pruitt. "And I'm supposed to talk with UConn and USC tomorrow."

Pruitt is one of the top shooters in the west and may end up spending some time at both guard spots in college. Pruitt, in fact went up againt his former Centennial teammate at the Pangos Premier League, Arron Afflalo, 6-4 JR SG, Compton (Calif.) Centennial, who is the #1 ranked junior shooting guard in the west.

We also spoke to Afflalo at the Pangos League, having just visited UCLA's campus unofficially before playing in the league Tuesday night. When asked about his impressions of new UCLA head coach Ben Howland, Afflalo said, "It was very good. Coach Howland seems like a good guy. He told me that he's actually been on the job for thirty six hours and he wanted to let me know that I'm right at the top of his recruiting list."

Even though rumors have heated up about Afflalo possibly committing to UCLA, don't look for a decision any time soon from Afflalo. "I'm probably still going to wait through the spring and summer. But I'll definitely decide before the season starts next year." Quentin Thomas, 6-3 JR PG Oakland (Calif.) Tech, is scheduled to meet with one of the Kansas coaches at the Oakland Tech campus today, according to a source close to the recruitment.

We weren't able to determine whether Thomas will meet with Roy Williams or one of the assistants from the Jayhawk staff.

Thomas is not well known nationally, due to the fact that he skipped last summer's events, but he figures to be ranked among the top point guards in the country by the end of July.
