Grant's Halverson Wouldn't Mind Staying Home

Fast and athletic, Portland (OR) Grant linebacker Daniel Halverson hopes to fall in line with other Grant High alums who have blazed their own trail within the ranks of college football. After recently picking up his first two official offers, Halverson hopes he'll receive a little more attention from his favorite school.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"I do not."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I've just been getting mail and I talked to coach 'Wood (Steve Greatwood) when he came up to the school and I've just been in contact by e-mail."

How often would you say that you're in contact with them?

"Letters probably come like a letter a week or something like that. And then, depending on how often we e-mail, I get an e-mail every two weeks or so."

Has coach Greatwood been pretty much the only coach you've been in contact with from Oregon?

"Yeah and I met coach (Scott) Frost. I've been in contact with him (too)."

Has coach Greatwood mentioned anything about a potential offer coming down the road for you?

"Nothing like that really, but they wanted my film and I just haven't been able to get it out yet. I've just been working on finishing it and it's just taking longer than I expected."

At this point, what would you say your overall interest in Oregon is?

"Oregon has been my favorite school ever since I was little, so Oregon is definitely an option or one of my top options."

What is it about Oregon that has you so interested in them?

"Just the tradition of the program. They've been my favorite school since I was little, I've always dreamed of going there and it's in-state, close to home -- I'm not that far away, only a couple of hours away -- and just a great school."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I mean, if anywhere on the field I'm needed, I'm willing to play anything that gets my team the 'W.' I give 110 percent every play and I just do whatever it takes to get my team that win."

Is there a player at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"I'm not necessarily trying to pattern my game after anyone, but I would say that if I look up at someone, it would probably be Ray Lewis just because the way he's gotten after it for years on end at an age where he's still playing like a rookie."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Definitely, the school is number one because for me, athletics isn't gonna be around forever so I want to have my education. Then definitely the football program and my position coach. I want to have that good relationship with him just to know that I'm gonna be there for the next four to five years of my life, so I want to have the best possible coach to get me to where I want to be and get my full potential."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"I have. I think one of the majors I was looking at at Oregon was sports business and I think I want to pursue something definitely that has to do with sports."

Do you currently have offers from other schools?

"Yes, I do. I have two from Yale and from Air Force."

What schools have you been hearing a lot from lately?

"I talked to a coach from Idaho, from Boise State, I've talked to a coach from Washington State, I talked to a coach from Washington and Stanford just got in contact with me. I've been getting a lot of mail from Notre Dame still and the coach at SMU is really looking at me because (former Grant alum) Kenneth Acker is down at SMU now and he said that they really like me down there, so those are probably the main ones...and Oregon State."

Do you have a top five or anything out of the schools that you've been hearing from?

"I'd have to say Oregon, Washington, definitely Stanford and Notre Dame and probably Oregon State."

Do you have any plans to go to any camps? Unofficial visits? Junior Days?

"Yeah, I went to the Washington Junior Day, I'm going down to the Oregon State team camp -- my whole team is going down there -- and then in May, I'm going to the Nike combine at Stanford and then probably the Nike combine at Washington later in June."
