McNamara Has Ducks In Top Group

As one of the top tight ends in the entire country, San Diego (CA) Westview three-star tight end Taylor McNamara has his proverbial pick of the litter when it comes to choosing a college. However, McNamara has already unofficially narrowed his list down to a group of six or seven schools.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No I do not right now."

What, if any, contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I talk to coach (John) Neal probably once a week and then coach (Tom) Osborne was by my school yesterday."

Were you able to meet face-to-face with coach Osborne?

"It was really weird because they followed the NCAA rules to a "T". With some of the other schools, even though they're not supposed to talk to you right now, they're not too worried about it because nobody's really doing anything -- they're just talking to you for 20 minutes and it's not a big deal -- but I think since Oregon got caught for the violations, they've been really following the rules so they don't get in trouble for anything. (Osborne) didn't say much to me. He just shook my hand and said "We like you," but he was at my school for like 7 hours. He talked to my coaches, my teachers, counselors, all that."

Was that the first time you've met coach Osborne?

How would describe your relationship with coach Neal?

"I know him real well. He's one of my favorite coaches to talk to. He's got great advice for me and he's been telling me to be patient and I have. He's been giving me some good advice and I think he's a great coach."

In your conversations with coach Neal, has there been any discussion about a possible offer coming through for you?

"Coach Neal has told me to wait for coach Osborne to come down because he wants to meet the tight ends that he offers before he offers them. He (Osborne) was here yesterday, so whether he sends me an e-mail...I mean it was the weirdest thing. He was here for 7 hours and I probably said 10 words to know what I mean? It was really different. Most of these coaches, even though (they can't really), they come in and talk to you. It was really different. He watched me practice for 3 hours, so I'm expecting either a call from somebody or an e-mail from somebody or else I'll be a little frustrated, just because I've been patient with it."

What would you say your overall interest is in Oregon at this point?

"I think it's obviously a great school and they have things that stand out to recruits. They have great facilities and from talking with the coaches, they seem like good coaches. I really want to get up there and see everything. I have them pretty high on my list and they haven't offered, so that says something...but if they don't e-mail me or call me sometime in I guess the next week, I'd be a little upset."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'm a receiving tight end, but I'm learning to block and I love to block. That's what I'm looking most at this year, just rounding out my blocking and really becoming a dominant blocker so that I can dominate on both sides of that."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"Rob Gronkowski. I watch a lot of him and (Antonio) Gates. A lot of people say that I play like Gronkowski, so I've been watching a lot of his tapes."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Just how the coaches coach. That's the big thing, seeing how they practice and seeing how they coach and see how the people are at the university, because that's who you're gonna be around most and that's what's really makes up your life is the people around you. So that's a huge part of it. Then just enjoying the environment too while you're up there."

Have you taken an unofficial visit to Oregon in the past?

"No I have not, but I'm going to this thing called the 'Nike Open' up in Beaverton and that's in July and I plan on taking an unofficial to Oregon sometime after that."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to major in when you get to college?

"Yes I have. Journalism and broadcasting is something that I'm really interested in and something I think I'd be pretty good at."

What are some of the offers that you have right now from other schools?

"I know I'm somewhere in the mid-20's. There's been some schools that have slipped in like Purdue and Northwestern that have offered, but I haven't really been reporting those. I know Oklahoma has jumped in's in the mid-20's, but I've narrowed my list a little bit."

Who are some of your favorites at this point?

"It's Cal, Stanford, Colorado, Oregon, Alabama, Washington and Notre Dame."

As far as camps and visits go, where have you been and where do you plan on going?

"Places I've been are Stanford, Cal and Arizona. Places I want to see are all those other places left on the list. I want to see Colorado, Oregon, Notre Dame and Alabama."
