Could SMU Verbal Lewis Play Slot At Oregon?

As one of the more versatile athletes in California for the Class of 2012, South Gate (CA) South East three-star athlete and SMU verbal commit Robert Lewis is not yet set on his college decision. Lewis plans on taking all five official visits and it appears Oregon could be the beneficiary of one this fall.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"Well, at first, I didn't even know they offered...they had talked to my coach and my coach told me that they had offered, but it was during a time when I didn't hear nothing from them. Not too long after, a coach came down and talked to me and stuff like that."

Right now, you're a verbal commit to SMU. Correct?

If you can, explain your situation as it stands right now with SMU. Are you still planning on taking other visits?

"I'm definitely not done (with recruiting) yet. I'm gonna take all of my visits. Basically, I still have all my options open. I'm committed, but I'm still just looking at other colleges and I'm gonna take all my visits."

How often have you been in contact with coaches from Oregon?

"I talked to them and they said they were gonna come by, but he's only come by once."

Do you remember the coach that visited you?

"It was coach (Gary) Campbell."

Is Oregon considering you at running back? Wide receiver?

"Well, they told me it is more what I want to play, but he told me that if I weren't to add a bunch of muscle, they'll use me probably as a slot (receiver). He told me that in the offense they run, slot is basically a running back too because they motion in the backfield a lot. He told me that I could definitely play running back because of my size."

Do you have a preference between the two positions?

"I don't know. It really doesn't matter to me as long as I'm on the field. I definitely feel like I'm better and more comfortable at running back, but I could definitely play slot too. So, I don't know. It'll be a decision I make later on as far as what I want to stick to."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point, despite your verbal commitment to SMU?

"My overall interest in Oregon is big. It's a big program. I definitely want to take my visit there and check out the facilities and stuff like that."

What is it about the program that stands out to you the most?

"They're definitely one of the top teams in the Pac-12 right now. I like their offense too; I like the way they run their offense. They're a fast-paced offense that's real similar to the style that I run right now. They're a big program; they made the national championship so that's always good."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"As a player, I'm not the biggest but I'm more of the elusive-type back. I'm quick, I have good agility and I have great vision."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"Definitely I try to play like DeSean Jackson. He's not the biggest player, but he's very explosive. Percy Harvin too, because he's real versatile too. He plays wide receiver and you could use him as a running back."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Well definitely the campus life, the school, the academics -- that's one of the major things is the academics -- and basically the tradition and the school...those are the main things that will go in to my decision."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"No, I'm not sure yet, but that's one of the things that'll I'll talk over with my family and try and see what I want to do. I haven't figured out what I want to study yet."

What are some of the offers that you currently hold from other schools?

"San Diego State, Utah, Colorado, Utah State, Ole Miss and I think that's it."

Are there any other schools that you've been hearing a lot from recently?

"Oregon, they always send me mail and keep me updated and stuff like that, but I've been hearing a lot from UCLA, USC -- they want me to come up to camps -- Cal, Arizona State, Colorado -- they've been talking to me a lot..."

Do you have any plans to attend any camps or take any unofficial visits this summer?

"I don't know about the unofficials yet, but yeah I'm going to a few camps this summer. I think I'm going to a camp at UCLA -- the coach wants me to come down -- and I think I'm going to the Rising Stars camp at USC...definitely camps like that."
