Ducks "High" On Marshall's List

As one of the top running backs on the entire West Coast, you can't blame San Jose (CA) Valley Christian Schools four-star running back Byron Marshall for taking his time when it comes to recruiting. With top programs from all over seeking his signature, Marshall is in no rush to select a school.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I talk with them often...pretty much once every one or two weeks."

Which coaches from Oregon do you speak with?

"I talked to coach (Gary) Campbell I think twice, but mainly I talk to coach (Nick) Aliotti."

What is your relationship like with those two coaches?

"We talk about the school, how I feel about them and how I would fit in to the program and what the program has to offer for me. I talk to coach Aliotti more, so I know a little more about him and his family a little bit."

What would you say your overall interest is in Oregon at this point?

"They're high on my list. I like them a lot."

What is it about Oregon that has you highly interested in them?

"For the program, it's a really, really good program. They win, they're great coaches and another good thing to know is that they have like four coaches on their coaching staff who have been there for over 20 years...with some coaches, you wonder if they're gonna leave or something like that, but with Oregon, it's something you don't need to worry about. They have really, really nice facilities -- I haven't seen them, but I've heard about them -- they have good education and Eugene is a good area."

Have you been to Eugene in the past for anything?

"Yeah, I was in Eugene once before...I had Junior Olympics there."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"As a player I would say that I'm a leader-type. I'm an emotional player; I like to get a little hyped and I like to get the rest of my team and the crowd involved in the game also. Some of the attributes I have as a player are good speed, good vision, good power."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"Not necessarily. I've kinda been doing my own thing and I think I'm unique from that standpoint. I don't want to be the mirror image of someone else. I watch Adrian Peterson a lot and I think probably the only thing I would take from him is running hard every play. I try to make my own style, I guess."

What are you looking for in a program?

"The coaches, the program -- whether it's a winning program or not -- and then education. Those are the main things."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"I'm looking more towards kinesiology, but I'm not quite sure yet."

What are some of the big offers that you currently hold from other schools?

"Oregon, Cal, Notre Dame, Washington, Arizona State, Northwestern, UCLA..."

Do you have a top five or a list of favorites at this point?

"Yeah, changes. It's at different levels, I guess. There's a level where I'm not too interested, a level where I want to do more research, and a level where I'm highly interested. There's a few schools in each category."

Are you able to state which schools are in that highly interested category?

"I don't want to discuss that yet."

As far as camps and unofficial visits go, where have you been and where do you plan on going this summer?

"I've only been to Cal and Stanford cause they had a Junior Day and they're close to me, but I'm not gonna go to any camps this summer. For unofficials, I plan on taking some unofficials, I'm just not sure where I'm going yet."

Do you have a timetable for when you'd like to have a decision made?

"I'm just playing things how they are. When I feel like I know a school and I feel comfortable with it, then I'll choose it, so it doesn't matter whether it's early or it's late."
