Coprich Hears From Oregon

In the first three years of his young life, Stevenson Ranch (CA) West Ranch two-star running back Jeff Coprich, Jr. overcame more tragedy than many see in an entire lifetime. Now however, having already earned the Watkins State of California Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, Coprich, Jr. stands on the precipice of his dream to play major college football.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"I don't have an offer from Oregon, but coach [Gary] Campbell, he called me and told me that right now he's looking over film [of me] even though it was late in the recruiting process. They've already got one running back [Byron Marshall] and he said that they're looking for another. I'm hoping they offer cause that's a good school."

Is coach Campbell the only coach from Oregon that you've been in contact with?

"Yes."

How long have you been in contact with coach Campbell since the recruiting process started for you?

"Actually, I got in contact with him yesterday. He called me and that was my first time ever talking to him."

What is it about Oregon that has you interested in them as a potential option?

"Well, first and foremost, everybody knows about the jerseys and stuff. They're a Nike sponsor and I also know that it's a great place out in Oregon. They have great facilities, I know I hear they have a good education there and then you get to go against the best athletes up at Oregon, so that's interested me."

Were you able to see the new helmets they wore for the Rose Bowl?

"Yeah (laughter). It was crazy, I loved it! They always come up with something new, that's what I love."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"As a running back, I hit the hole fast and I have breakaway speed. On defense, I cover very well. I'm a really tough man press guy and I like getting in receivers' faces a lot and press ‘em off the ball. I'm quick and I can change direction really, really, really well and my footwork as well is very good."

In your conversation with coach Campbell, did he say whether they were looking at you for running back or as an athlete?

"They're looking at me for running back."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try and pattern your game after?

"Reggie Bush. I've always looked up to Reggie Bush. That's my main guy right there."

What are you looking for in a program?

"You know, playing time is always the thing you want to worry about, but your education is the first and foremost thing. I want to get an education. When it comes to football, you want to be on a great team. Obviously, Oregon has a great team and has great athletes on their team and is a place that everybody wants to be."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"I do. I have three things [I'm looking at]: I have engineering, business and sports medicine. I don't know which one I'll pursue, but those are the three things that are sticking out right now."

You lost your sister and your cousin in an automobile accident when you were younger. How have you carried that with you through the years?

"It impacted me big time. Everyday I wake up and tell myself that I'm a miracle kid. I've been through so much stuff like nobody else has; I lost my sister and my cousin and I almost died myself. When it comes to football, I think a lot about my sister and my cousin all the time when I step out on to the field. Those are two angels that are always with me. When I'm working or I feel like something is wrong, I always say, ‘I don't have to be here right now,' but God kept me on this earth to play football. My sister actually has a library [at her elementary school] named after her after she passed away...It's the Essence K. Coprich Library. Our goal for the library foundation is for everyone to donate books every year for kids in the community so they have more books to read."

What offers do you currently hold from other programs?

"Right now, I've got an offer from Hawaii -- I'm taking a visit up there on the 13th -- and then I still have my offer from Colorado, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Illinois State, Army, Montana...that's everybody."

Is the visit to Hawaii the only visit you have scheduled out right now?

"Well I took one visit to Illinois State and then yeah, the 13th is my upcoming visit to Hawaii."
