Whitaker Looking Forward To Oregon Visit

With only one offensive lineman verbally committed for their 2012 recruiting class, Oregon has turned it's attention to Murrieta (CA) Vista Murrieta two-star offensive lineman Corey Whitaker, who has gained late notice by several programs. Currently on an official visit to Nebraska, Whitaker was kind enough to take some time to discuss the latest with the Ducks.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No not yet."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"Contact started in December. I gave coach [Tom] Osborne a call and then I had coach [Don] Pellum down at my school, who was down there for [Oregon verbal commit] Jeremy Castro. I went and introduced myself to him and he relayed my information to coach [Steve] Greatwood and then I was contacted by coach Greatwood and we started getting a relationship going there."

How often would say that you've been in contact with Oregon?

"I e-mail coach Greatwood all the time and I give him a call about once a week."

As far as visits go, have you scheduled a visit with Oregon yet?

"Yeah. January 27."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"Oh, very high (laughter). Yeah, very high...I've been there twice for Nike Track Nationals. Coach Greatwood mentioned that I could possibly do track coupled with football in college. That's really interesting to me and it's a big part of making my decision. I've grown up in California all my life, so it's been hot, and I think Oregon is a nice place to get away from that."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I just go all out. I've never held back. I broke my leg as a sophomore and it was a really tough time for me. I guess ever since then, I've just played like every play is going to be my last play and it's never stopped for me."

Is there anyone at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"Not really. I haven't really followed anyone else, I guess. None that I can think of at least."

In your conversations with coach Greatwood, has he specified a particular position along the offensive line that he's evaluating you at?

"I've always been told that I was going to be a guard in college and he says he plays the best five guys and position changes happen, so I'd expect anything really."

Do you have a preference as far as position goes?

"I've played left tackle my whole career, so that would be a big thing for me to do, but I'm willing to [play] anywhere, actually."

What is your current height and weight right now?

"Right now I'm 6'5'' and I'm 255 lbs."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Just the importance of where I fit in the program. I don't want to just go someplace where they don't really like me. Coach Greatwood has always expressed that he likes the way I play and he likes my attitude on the field and my work ethic. That's really good to hear from someone like coach Greatwood."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

What other offers do you currently have from other schools?

"Well actually I'm on a visit to Nebraska right now. We have a little down time and I'm in my room. We're probably going to have [an offer] there and other than that I have offers from Nevada, San Jose State, San Diego State, Idaho, Fresno State and I think that's it."
