Mathis Calls Oregon "Childhood Favorite"

Currently rated a top ten defensive end recruit nationally by, Upland (CA) four-star defensive end Joe Mathis has already fielded offers from 28 programs spanning the country. However, Mathis is missing an offer from the school he called his "childhood favorite."

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No, no I don't."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I've been recruited by Oregon since September or August and I've just been getting letters from them and I've talked to the recruiting coordinator [Don Pellum] about twice and that's all."

When was the last time you spoke with coach Pellum?

"I talked to him about a month ago."

How often would you say that you receive mail from Oregon?

"Like everyday."

When you talked with coach Pellum, what kinds of things did the two of you discuss?

"I think they're not really recruiting defensive ends this year or something. He was saying they really want me and stuff, they just want to see me in person and all that and come and see me in May."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"I'm interested in anybody right now, but the Oregon Ducks, they were my early favorite but then other schools came in. I still have love for the Ducks, but I don't know [where everything stands] right now."

What is it about Oregon that stands out to you?

"They've been my favorite since I was little cause of their uniforms of course...That's why I have a lot of interest in them."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I go in a zone before the game, I'm really intense and I'm unstoppable and real crazy...It's like in my head, I have a switch that I switch on and switch off."

Is there a player at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"James Harrison from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Julius Peppers."

What are you looking for in a program?

"A school where I can get my business degree and coaches that can make me a better player so I can go to the next level. That's pretty much it."

What are some of the offers that you currently hold from other programs?

"Michigan, Michigan State, Oregon State, Boise State, I'm supposed to be talking to Alabama this week -- I think they're supposed to offer me -- but I have Auburn, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, San Diego State, USC, UCLA...I think have 28 offers now.

Do you have a top five or a list of favorites at this point?

"No, I don't have a top five or favorites. In September, I'll tell people my top five before the football season, like the day before my game."

As far as camps, unofficial visits, and Junior Days go, where have you been and where do you plan on going over the next few months?

"I've been to UCLA, USC, and San Diego State, I guess April 13 I'm supposed to be going to Nebraska, and I'm supposed to go to Arizona State after I get back from Nebraska. I think I'm supposed to go to Cal, too."
